You are right. With the top down any water that goes into the buttres holes goes right into the trunk liner. Washing with the top down is not a great idea unless you're very careful. With the top up and the butresses in place there are seals that come into place sealing those holes.

Overall I've been pretty amazed at the engineering that went into water drip management on this car. Top down is another story of course.
