From Wikipedia Corvette entry (emphasis added by me):

1963 would see the introduction of the new Corvette Stingray coupé with its distinctive split rear window and fake hood vents as well as an independent rear suspension. The split rear window was discontinued in 1964 due to safety concerns. Because they made the design too busy, the hood vents were also cut.

What is GM thinking? The same thing they were thinking 40 years ago.
Car designs go through stages....one stage is adding a bunch of chrome and accents which eventually gives way to "less is more", and then back again to the accents. I've noted recently a lot of chrome appearing on the front grills of cars and trucks these days...give it a few years....we'll get tired of that...and it'll be back to simple.
