sorry, I happen to be bandwidth-impaired (not connectile-dysfunction, just bandwidth-impaired ).

Is the 253mph on an independent data box (like a DL1) or is it indicated on the speedo?

I ask this because a couple of years ago, I became aware that cars sold in the European market are required by European regulation to always indicate a speed FASTER than you are actually going.

I didn't believe it, but eventually did read the regulation, and actually got to chat with a couple of German drivers that I had the opportunity to get together with. They kept running around Michigan in their rental car about 15 miles per hour over the speed limit...

...when I asked the driver why he was so anxious to get a ticket, he said "I'm not speeding - 85 miles per hour is really only 77, all cars read faster than your real speed."

I explained that this is not the case in the US, but apparently IS the case for European cars.

Then, he slowed down to an indicated 77 mph.

I've had the chance, since then, to actually instrument a couple of cars, and on several samples is certainly the case - sometimes the speedo is as much as 10% indicated faster than actual speed on a handful of European cars - even ones that span both US and European markets, and even sometimes if they are built in the US.

So, the Veyron, instead of being 253, may be really closer to 230 mph if it is the indicated speed - STILL fast as hell, but a big difference for magazine racers...

The speed looked to be tracked using a third party device (GPS ?). They never showed the cars speedo.

Last night I watched Futurecars on Discovery. They had two Opals (Speedsters - but quite Sky-like still—both in yellow because we really know that is the SPEED color) that were powered by diesels. They developed 200 HP and speeds of 160 mph. They also got 100 mpg!!

Very respectible 0-60 numbers too! In fact, faster than most production sports cars. . .

Wow...

Makes my top personal speed of 135 mph look like I was standing still (on the auto bahn of course). I like the part where he states the tires won't last much longer due to the heat.

Wow.

Wow is right!!! C&D magazine did test the car at 253 mph a few years ago. Just amazing. A few tidbits I read elsewhere: the car normally will run to 230 mph with the rear wing fully extended. For the greater than 230 mph runs, other than what the tester stated, you have to start from a dead stop, can't put on the brakes, or turn the wheel greater than so many degrees from center (don't remember how much. If the brakes are pressed or you turn the wheel too much then the car goes back into the 230 mph mode and you'll have to start over again. I read that the car is beyond stable at 230 mph. With less downforce (in the top speed mode) the car is not as stable but I'm sure it's more stable than most other supercars.

Awesome video, but I didn't care for you new idol's opinion of the Solstice.

Anyone know where I can borrow one of those speedo devices? I'm still convinced my speedo is wrong, though the dealer said they paced it with another car and it's right on. While we're at it, anyone know where I can borrow a Veyron? I only need it for 12 minutes!

Yeaaaaaaaaahhhhhh 253mph

I want to swap out my Turbo 4 for that Quad Turbo W-16 Engine. Amazing what VW is doing in the auto world. Gotta hand it to the Germans, they know how to engineer.

I want to see what 253MPH feels like with the top down. I wonder if Robert can make a 1" think wind restrictor that comesup on a hydrolic arm at higher speeds???

That whole Second Key thing to lower the spoilers and car for higher speeds makes me Jones for some serious James Bond Mods!!!
