Camaro tidbits from July08 R&T

Here's a quick summary of the July 08 Road & Track Report.

Expected delivery: 1st QTR 09 as an early 2010 model.

Three trims:
LS: 3.5L V6 220HP.
LT: 3.5L V6 DI 300HP.
SS: 6.2L V8 LS3 400HP.

Chevy is looking at the possibility of replacing the LS V6 with a 2.0L Turbo, but won't be available (if at all) until 2011 or 2012 model.

Chevy goal is to keep base prices in the $20K ot $30K range, with the SS running in the mid to up $30Ks.

Seems like some pretty reasonable pricing. Can't wait to see the final product on the streets.

I don't believe this is the right time for the Camaro or even Challenger to come forthe...it will not be a HIT...although I love that Camaro.

The Challenger wins on every aspect in my book except for the lack of a 500HP LSA option I probably won't be buying either, but given the choice I'd take the Challenger I think.

Gas prices, eh? I think you'll see 'em hit nicely the first year, as the initial demand of buyers won't be put off by the gas prices. The problem will be in maintaining the line for the duration of the plant and machinery investment. These are mass produced vehicles, designed for several years of production. First year will probably be rosy. The following years may be problematic.

At least 500, if not more. But the Z/28 won't be out until MY'11 at best.

Ditto on the Challenger. Having been a GM guy my whole life (currently having 2 saturns) and owned a 1st gen, 3rd gen and 4th gen Camaro, and still have a 3rd gen, the 5th gen's front just isn't as aesthetically appealing as the Challenger.

I am hoping that the 2010 Challenger SRT-8 has the 500hp 6.4L.

Everyone has their preferences. I like the lines of the Camaro better than the Challenger, although both are nice cars. Speaking of the Challenger, Dodge has released the MSRP on their low end SE model:

MSRP of $21,995 (including $675 destination),
3.5-liter V-6
250 horsepower and 250 lb.-ft. of torque.
Four-speed automatic
18/25 MPG

That's not a bad MSRP if you want the looks. Although the 250HP is a good chunk of power, keep in mind the Challenger is a heavy car (4000+). That's a 25% difference compared to our SKY. So the 250 on the Challenger will perform like 187 on a 3000 lb car. An SE Challenger will probably run numbers similar to an NA Solstice or NA SKY.

But 21995 sticker is a nice number. With incentives, once the newness wears off, you can scoop these up for under $20K.

It will be interesting to see if the Camaro LS comes in with these types of numbers.
