GM has EcoTec....Ford has EcoBoost

GM pioneered fuel efficient performance with the direct injection turbo 2 liter EcoTec used in our skys, producing 260HP. It's making an I4 respond like a V6.

Now Ford is jumping on the "Eco" bandwagon with a 3.5 liter twin turbo V6, direct injection, producing 340HP. It's making a V6 respond like a V8. Although the initial focus is on their high end luxury models and SUVs, I'll bet anyone even money this baby finds its way into a Stang. And considering tuning, I bet they can push this baby into the 400HP realm.

Coming from someone who owned stangs prior to the sky.....i would say putting in a V6...forced fed or not...is sacrilegious. They are actually talking about putting in a 6.1 L in the 2010's. I would think it would make more sense to put this Eco "boosted" V6 in the Ford Fusion so Ford will have a sports sedan offering.

My understanding is that there will be a series of twin-turbo eco-boost engines. (starting with the V6, then a 4, and maybe a V8) I believe that somewhere they were pushing it as diesel mileage from a gasoline engine. I would expect to see one as an option in almost everything they make ... in 4-6 years or so.

Doesn't the Mustang come standard with a V6 now ?
I thought only the GTs got a V8.

Seems like this engine would be an improved version of the standard Mustang engine now. Or am I incorrect about the current engine ?

Ford tried turbocharging a 4 cylinder back in '80 and '81 for the Mustang and Mercury Capri. These engines were junk and had no durability. Hopefully they get their engine program together soon to catch up with GM in this department regardless of which vehicle they use them in.

V4,V6, V8, V10, V12, V16

Its not always about the large engine size with crazy horse power. This concept is harped upon by the Lotus community.

Its the ride the look and the feel!

I fell in love with the ecotec back when it was just a 2.2 in the cavalier. Now that we have the LNF I feel that it is the best engineered engine readily available. GM has something they can be really proud of now. So hopefully they already plan to expand this technology to a 6 and 8 cylinder platform. If not, then they are already starting to fall behind again.

They keep making cars that go faster and yet keep lower the speed limit as communities expand. Then they toss in picture taking - speed radar devises and each little community hires their own police ... who hand out more tickets to justify their pay checks.

totally agree, a muscle car is not a muscle car without a V8.... my friend drives a v6 camaro, 02, it looks good , for a camaro, and hes making decent power with exhaust, chip, etc, he might do cams and says he'll do "nawzz" which i always heckle on him about being a ricer, but I still suggest, why dont you drop in a v8 or rather drop the car on a v8 (camaro owners know what i mean)

I like the sound of the V8's and most internal combustion engines, but these motors should have been in out in the century they were designed in.

We should be making electric/ Hydrogen based cars and putting billions in to the R&R into those cars for American drivers. You know as the fuel prices go up there is global demand for efficient none polluting green cars. Electric does not need to be slow. Heck my electric RC cars can get up to 60 mph that's fast in scale speed something like 500 mph. I saw a Ariel atom fixed with electric motor and bat beat a Lamorghini Gallardo and NASCAR around a track.

Stop using Steel and start using lighter stronger composites. Ramp up manufacturing for these items.

Replace wiring with the new conductive plastics and LED's running at 2.5- 3.5 volts instead of using copper at 12 volts.

Replace tire with the new solid core systems which would use one third the rubber saving more on costs.

Replace steal bearings with composite ceramic which are more efficient and last much longer and lighter as well.

These and many other items are what we should be founding our nation on instead of throwing back to a long gone ERA. Gas is not 25 cents a gallon anymore and it is only going to increase and become less accessable.

So if you like just looking at a V8 and any other gasoline engine that you can't get gas for then by all means buy it, but if you are looking to the future then save the money and invest in new technology.

America cannot get ahead looking to the past and hoping things will not change. Ford and GM are loosing billions why because they can't or won't turn over the keys to the new way of thinking and scrap the old combustion engine and the designers that keep that relic going.

Damn if I could be CEO for a year at either company I would own the world in sales within 5 years.

you are correct. I was taking the perspective of using the V6 turbo as a more efficient replacement for the V8s.

All performance cars should be V8 and rear wheel drive. Ideally they should get 5 MPG and go like stink.
