The New Get Smart Movie...

I saw it today, and was pleased to see that it not only featured Max's Red Sunbeam Tiger, it also paid tribute to his brown Opel GT and blue Karmann Ghia!

Very cool sequence.

I liked the driver of the Opel GT, too!

I was disappointed by the Steve Martin Pink Panther movie- he just couldn't do the role justice.

Steven Carrell, however, did a great job as Maxwell Smart. They managed to roll in all the classic lines ('Sorry about that, Chief', 'Missed it by THAT much', 'Would you believe...', etc) without it being a cheesy copy.

Anne Hathaway was smoking hot as 99, too.

It has a lot of big-name cameos, which added to the fun.

I laughed harder than I have at a movie in a long time.

I did not get that good of a look at the Opel GT; I did not notice the split turn signal/brake lights - a dead giveaway for the later years. I am thinking it was about a 1969 or 1970.

Note that it was an ORIGINAL Opel GT - just like Max drove in the TV Series - not a Kappa.

As for the Pink Panther, those are some of my favorite films, too. I was disappointed by the way that Steve Martin defined the character as well. I always though that the only actor who could rival Peter Sellers in that role would be fellow Englishman Rowan Atkinson. He has that goofiness of appearance, lovability combined with absolute pompousness to pull off a Clouseau.

I heard on an interview with Mel Brooks where the idea for Get Smart came from (the original TV series.) He and Buck Henry were tasked to come up with a new series - absolute blank piece of paper. They tool a look at what the most popular films were in the early to mid-1960s, and they came up with the James Bond series and the Pink Panther series. On one hand you have a super-spy with all kinds of nifty gadgets, and on the other side you have a bumbling lovable fool who still manages to get the job done and come off as a hero. Combine James Bond and Inspector Clouseau and you get Maxwell Smart!
