ZR1 shakedown on the Autobahn

ZR1 shakedown on the Autobahn. Driving like this is ho hum in Germany, but would get you arrested in the U.S.

Ah memories as far as driving around on the autobahns in Germany. Did that done that for about 5 years in total with 2 tours. After I re-upped in early 70's, I bought me one of these to drive over there..

This was the closest picture of one that I could find on the WWW that looked & resembled my baby, it looks like mine as far as the colors and the top, metallic gold paint black top. BUT, I had fancy rims and better tires and a nice /wing/ spoiler. Dodge Charger 440 R/T. The only one in Europe at the time. The only other "competitor" I had was a 442 Olds in Frankfurt was he, (I was up north in Wesel).. & that poor fellow didn't ever want to race me.. Also, I brought that puppy back home with me, FYI Bogie, drove home from Arizona to Florida on leave and in Texas, in the desolated areas of I-10 bwt San Antonio & Dallas I believe it was, You can run "autobahn speeds" (at least you use to), I certainly did back then..

In Germany, the Fastest I ever had it was 155MPH trying to catch up to a 911that absolutely blew by me and I was cruising at 100-110MPH just outside of Cologne late night at about 1-2AM. Finally caught up to the 911, (after 30 minutes of chasing tail lights, she had a head start ) at the out skirts of the city. Gorgeous blond babe driving, impressive.. Only other cars that competed were the high end BMW's and a few Benz. On the autobahn, none could touch me with the power & torque I had, they always caught up to me however in the mountains and twisties, and on a few occasions, actually attempted to pass me AND succeeded, which of course I was always able to reclaim on the next straight away.. It was fun, challenging and very dangerous.. young people do foolish things, back then, a vet in a no speed limit environment, I was one of them back then.. Ah memories..

Oh BTW, that vette running there is definitely hot.. I would do it

That thing is sweet. I wish they would make more than 2k of them a year, so you could get one for near sticker.

MB, remember doing that on my 2 tours over there myself. First time I had a 1970 Monte Carlo with the 350 and a 4bolt main, You couldn't blow that engine up and it would run forever. It wasn't your 440, but it sure would scoot. When I left Deutschland I sold the car for $1000 more then I had paid for it 5 years before. The second time was a mixture of cars, but the BMWs that I had then would sure move down the bahn without any problems. Made the Kaiserslautern to Frankfurt run on #6, about 120 miles, just over 70 minutes.
Would love to have more places to open up my Sky a little bit, do ya'll ever take the cars to Homestead?

Sad to say, I have not.. BUT, we have had a few SF members here that have for sure. There was a guy always posting in SE section on a car club meetings in South Miami that sponsored a thing for homestead track and a few Sky owners did do it... I am not sure how that is handled, but if you look to the older threads in the SE section, those videos of running in Homestead might still up.. it was last year, or perhaps the year before if I recall.. I'll try & find the thread. With me how ever, with a plain vanilla Sky, not worth spending doe on a track just to see what "it will do". We sorta already did it, done it on 2 runs this year. The Ring Around Lake Okeechobee, we sorta "aired them out on Hwy 27, and then coming home from the Naples cookie run, couple of us "opened it up" if you will..
Here that thread.. Sky on the Homestead Speedway
