GM plans to move Sky/Soltice production

The tentative contract between General Motors Corp. and the United Auto Workers says GM plans to transfer production of the Saturn Sky and Pontiac Solstice roadster from Wilmington, Del., to Bowling Green, Ky., after 2011.
"No future product allocation has been identified beyond the life of the current agreement," the document says of Wilmington.

someone else did a thread on this subject ...

knowing none of the reason's or facts just leaves me concerned for the workers and community in Delaware.

Part of the settlement was job security, so hopefully employment will be maintained or enlarged.

Does someone know any more facts ... or even rumor's?

I have heard that GM is working on a new platform for the Sky in four or five years, and that it will not be named "kappa" (greek letters are not part of their their platform naming strategy moving forward). This was just a rumor when I heard it, but if they move the plant in 2012, it fits. I just hope that they retrofit the Bowling Green plant and turn it into a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility.

Read an article on the new GM/UAW agreement, it calls for the Solstice, Sky, Opel GT, and Daewoo GTX to be produced in the same plant as the Corvette, the bean counters decided the only way to keep the Bowling Green Corvette Assembly plant open was to add additional models and get the plant to at least two shifts. No mention was made of any incentives by Bowling Green, but I bet they made some type of incentive offer to GM to keep the assembly plant in the same area as the Corvette museum since the the corvette museum brings in big bucks to the local area.

We have a couple of threads around this topic with the GM/UAW agreement. Let's continue discussion in the first of those. Saturn Sky and Pontiac Solstice until 2012 .
