OnStar to stop stolen cars...

"Starting with about 20 models for 2009, the service will be able to slowly halt a car that is reported stolen, and the radio may even speak up and tell the thief to pull over because police are watching.
OnStar already finds 700 to 800 cars per month using the global positioning system. With the new technology, which OnStar President Chet Huber said GM will apply to the rest of its lineup in future years, OnStar would call police and tell them a stolen car's whereabouts.
Then, if officers see the car in motion and judge it can be stopped safely, they can tell OnStar operators, who will send the car a signal via cell phone to slow it to a halt"

very cool indeed. And a godsend for insurance costs. Any vehicle equipped with this onstar system would have incredibly low insurance costs. not only recover a stolen vehicle (like lojack) but to actually STOP that vehicle dead in its tracks.....LoJack can't do that. I wonder if this system will be reverse compatible with 2007 models, i'd send my car back to the dealer for this upgrade in a heart beat.

I'm with you. If it's reverse compatible I'll be first in line at my dealer! My insurance is already 15% lower just becasue of OnStar.

Remote Start & Stop?

I heard the news this morning on the local news but I have to wonder if they cannot already do this? My 06 Impala has remote start if I can stand 50 feet away and start or stop the engine on my car seems OnStar that can access my whole car and lock and unlock my doors would have the same access to my remote start. When I program a new remote (key fob) its the lock unlock button that resets the new and old key fob and like magic the remote start works. I personally thing Big Brother already has this technology they just did not want to freak out us buyers until 5 million of us got used to this whole concept on OnStar. I wonder if OnStar can pull up a google type map and tell you every car that has Onstar in a square mile by doing a search for the GPS on all cars equipped?
Consider your car is mistaken for a look alike that was in a bank robbery, (my white Impala, at least 100 in Tulsa) your late for an appointment and exceeding the speed, all at once you car shuts down in the middle lane of the interstate and the radio comes on and tells you, "your under arrest" and the doors lock, your trapped in your own car. Just pray you don't get mangled by a 18-wheeler until the police arrive and arrest you! Yea this could and will happen just wait!

All a thief has to do is break off the ON STAR antenna before stealing the car... then it won't work.

i believe this was discussed once before. I think either the onstar system can work without the antenna, just at a limited range/area, or there's a secondary antenna we don't know about.

I guess I just don't believe that the auto and insurance industries would rely on an anti-theft device that could be so easily defeated, but I don't believe this is technically correct. The antenna on the outside of the car is for the cell phone part of the Onstar system. If you snap off the shark fin antenna which is for the cell phone, then the cell phone part of the system may not work (or it may still work, depending on signal strength). But there is also a GPS transmitter portion of the Onstar system. This GPS transmitter is somewhere inside the car, tied into the electrical system, so even if the cell phone capabillity is disabled, the GPS locator portion of Onstar should continue to work.

Now if the thief disconnects the battery, he may be able to defeat the GPS transmitter, but then he would need to tow your car away on a flat bed to steal it.

So it appears there is a separate "remote GPS antenna" inside the car somewhere.

Ok now I done somthing I am not proud of. The Huntsville Police Dept. has allowed me to post this one last item before I am taken downtown for calling in a false police call. My house was surrounded by three cop cars and guns were drawn as they came into my back yard. They found me sitting in the Sky and then I had to lay down on top of a fire ant nest while they checked for firearms. I guess this experiment worked and now I have five to ten if convicted to make up for it. I will see, if I plead on the mercy of the court if I can just wear an orange jumpsuit and pick up trash along side the road. Iffen yall see an ol fat man picking up trash on the road, honk your horn and I will wave at yall. Boy, the things I do for the forum....Skip....dedicated, determined, dependable....

I was told by the sales associate the ONstar theft system would not work if the antenna was removed, but then again he might had just wanted to sell the Lojack system to me. Personally I did not and have not activated the ONstar system, I just don't need more people being able to tell how I drive and how fast I drive. LOL
