GM HHR SS to use 2.0 Turbo

GM will be releasing an HHR SS with the same engine used in the KAPPA Turbo cars. Too bad it won't be rear wheel drive. Now that would be a blast to drive. Turbo owners, we have one of the most popular GM engines built.

I've heard that the HHR-SS will be using a turbo motor, but I haven't seen anything conclusive at all saying it will be the LNF (even from people who work at GM). Was there something you read that said it would be the LNF?

So are you saying, not revealing source info, that the motor will be the LNF like the next Cobalt SS?

According to the 2008 GM LNF release paper, the HHR SS is getting the LNF. Unfortunately the automatic car is getting detuned excessively because the trans isnt up to the job. It's listed as 250hp/222tq instead of 260/260 for the manual.

That sucks. Out of all the transmissions available, there isn't one auto trans that can take even 260 tq? Why not an auto tranny out of one of the bigger cars, like the Monte SS? Are there even auto's in that series? It would have to handle at least that much torque.

There's other considerations like weight, fuel economy, bolt patterns, space available, shifter placement, mounting areas. Sometimes its just not practical on a factory car. I'd attach the file but its an XLS and the forum wont let me

I figured there were other reasons like that, but you'd just figure that a major company like GM would be able to have a department focused on fixing problems like that (I see it as a problem that they have to detune the auto motor for the trans, instead of having a trans that can hold for the motor, but maybe they don't see it as a problem).

Leave it to the aftermarket, they will come up with a way to retune the engine and also beef up the transmission... just like the good old days huh...
and if there is enough demand from customers the 2009 may just be able to handle the extra power...
It's in the customer's hands.. Write Chevy and GM if you need an automatic that will handle the power!
As we have seen with the Sky, they are listening to suggestions.

LSD may be standard

The Limited Slip Differential may become standard for the manual transmission.

Took a look at the HHR site.
Chevrolet | 2008 HHR LS, Panel LS, LT, LTZ, Panel LT, Chevy HHR

Despite a post or two here... the engine appears to be the exact engine and tuning as the RL/GXP.

260hp 2.0l ecotech turbo.... 29mpg Hwy.

What also was surprised me was the price... 22k?! That seems fairly reasonable. hmmm... any rebates....

An early Redline made right after the turbo shutdown, I have powerlocks, but no power seat.
21,000 Miles (as of June 2008). No Issues!

If I needed to replace my CRV, I would get the top of the line HHR for $23K...sweet!
