Engine Fire - KIA?

Does anyone know how to figure out the build date for a KIA VIN? My daughter's 2005 Kia's engine caught on fire this morning. My son-in-law was going to work. The check engine light came on, there was a bang, and smoke and flames started coming out from under the hood. He was nearing a red light and stopped and got out safely. Car is totaled. Her insurance agent said there was a recall for a fuel line that split and caused engine fires, but it was for cars built before 3/31/04. This seems a little too coincidental, but her agent said her car couldn't be affected. Any ideas on how she should proceed?
