Medical Update

Just got back from VA and was informed that I now have got Type 2 Diabetes, and extremely high chloesterol(sp). I now have a wonderful diet that want me to follow, and more meds to take. Still not heard from neurosurgeon yet Glycerides were so high they couldn't read my bad cholesterol, and my good cholesterol was real low. Blood sugar was high after 12 hour fasting. I guess these test are better if you score low

I have to exercise(walk) and no, driving Mayhem does not qualify as proper exercise and walking around polishing her doesn't either!!!!!

doctor says according to my blood tests, he computed that over the next 10 years I have a 30% chance of stroke/heart attack

I am sorry to bore you with my problems, but it is good to talk with family!!! Thanks for listening

I'm sorry to hear about the diagnosis but very glad that you're hearing it now before the stroke/heart attack instead of after when you can do something about it. I used to work with Diabetes monitors. Please make sure that you follow the doctors guidelines, if you don't you will do a lot of damage to yourself that can't be fixed later!

Ernest - sorry to hear you aren't feeling well. Wishing you a speedy recovery. My sister was diagnosed with diabetes last year (after undergoing chemo & radiation treatments). She has been able to control hers with diet & pills - no insulin so far.

You went to the doctor because you thought something might be broken, just like you would take Mayhem to the dealer if you thought something was broken. You would trust the dealer to fix Mayhem and now you need to address the issues the the Doctor pointed out to you. I have been there with the cholesterol and when I started taking Lipator it dropped a 100 points. I have no side effects. To keep my analogy going its like putting the additive in the differential. If Mayhem stays in the garage she will slowly start to degenerate. If you keep your body in the garage is does the same. The ten year statistic is if you don't do the things he said. Here is my point Ernest, we are old, sh-- breaks. When it breaks we just need to fix it. It we fix it we are good for at least another 100,000.

Please don't think I am lecturing, us old guys need to stick together and help each other out. I got nailed with the "C" word 7 years ago and I am completely fixed (not looking for sympathy or trying to one up you). I did have do get a major overhaul though but then I got my warranty back. I am just saying that sometimes it looks pretty dark through the tunnel but if you turn on Mayhems lights (the spirit of the Redline) you will be able to find your way. Keep your head up and your foot on throttle. I will be praying that you find the strength and will power to do the things you need to do to get your self "old guy" healthy.

I would think that anyone our age would have about a 30% chance of heart/attack or stroke. Remember, if it taste good, spit it out. Its bad for you.

Take care of yourself Ernest! It isn't gonna be easy getting used to - but once you get the hang of monitoring your sugar and your diet, you'll get used to it!

May not be fun - but you've got Mayhem and Serenity (and us) to keep you smiling!

Gotta keep you healthy so I'll be able to meetcha at the HUGE SKY MEET sometime in the future!!!

Man, that is the best analogy I have seen and oh so true! The doctors got hold of me and I have dropped 15 lbs just by the simple exercise of pushing the plate away when I felt full - rather than eating until the plate was empty. Most of us eat at least 2 times as much as we need to (according to my Doc.) and the restraunt industry has trained us to do so. Remenber, we are all here wishing you success in what ever the Doc. directs you to do. Also remember that an occasional "slip" is no reason to not get back with the program. (That has been my hardest lesson!)

Ernest,

Just keep an eye on the positive. Be glad they are finding everything now. It is up to you to do the preventative maintenance now. I have had Type 2 diabetes for close to 15 years know and I am on the insulin pump, so believe me when I say I understand how you must feel. PM if you would like any info on Type 2 treatment and options. I have been through them all and could provide some insight into the pros and cons of each. Most important is to check your blood suger at least 4 times daily, take your meds, watch your diet and exercise.

Ernest,
Please remember. Follow your doctor's orders because if you don't, you could be "recalled to your maker" and there is no return!! Be good and do what we say. Peace

Like athletes, our status is day to day.

Polishing both Serenity and Mayhem is excersize -- but you have to put the polish 1/4 mile from the cars and the two cars 1/4 apart

Hang in there and listen to them guys -- they actually went to school for some of this...

Glad it's not 90% in the next two years. Please listen and find some exercise you enjoy. I like to jog/walk around the block 2-3 times a week. I can't eat everything I did 20 years ago but, with statins, I've got my cholesterol back into fairly acceptable range. Statins do wonders. Exercise and diet do wonders for diabetes and they've got better and better drugs to control that too. Tackle the Dr's recommendations and I'll pray for a much better report next time.

Ernest, I have been type 2 going on 5 years now and my blood suger is average 100 every morning. Go to one of the seminars at your local hospital and learn about Diabetis. It tant nothing to screw around with...Also eat oatmeal to bring down your bad chlostrol. mine combined last time I checked [1 week ago ] was 131. My good was just at 40 but the bad was at 120 or thereabouts. I had to give up baby back ribs every week just to keep the chlostrol down..The chlostrol will cause heart attacks as diabetis will cause blindness, limb removal, and veins that won't pass a spegetti test.....Skip..give up that dang cigs and that will help a whole lot....

Sorry about the diagnosis. You are indeed fortunate that they caught this early. You'll get used to the diet, and the exercise will actually make you feel better starting about the third week.

Age has it's pluses: wisdom, experience, perspective, and a calmer approach to life. It also has it's minuses: old physical bodies, and the changes that come with years of a life well lived. We can also remain young and light at heart if we choose, and that's what makes life so much more than living.

Again, the news could have been much worse. All of this can be mitigated and after a while, you'll look back on this as a turn for the better. Hang in there. My thoughts are with you, and may the wind be at your back.

All my best.
