Perfect spark plug?

Using the wrong spark plug causes all kinds of problems. From loss of power, miss firing to a grimmy exhaust area. Of course we all think we are using the best marketed plug or some may figure all spark plugs are the same. But there are differences.

So in my search for better, I try to be open minded and understand they may not work out as advertised ... (like my Pulstar plug, which broke in half).

Today I ordered a set of these "Denso Iridium" spark plugs click here to check out webpage: ( Denso Spark Plugs and SparkPlug Wire sets at DensoProducts.com )
Saturn Sky RedLine part # ITV16
with a gap of .045 and cost about $10 each!

DENSO IRIDIUM…THE ULTIMATE LONG-LIFE PLUG DENSO Iridium is fast becoming the standard for today's high-tech engines. The properties of DENSO's patented Iridium alloy have broken through the spark plug technology barrier. Employing a revolutionary 360° laser welding process, DENSO has created a spark plug unlike anything on the market today. Designed for durability under the most extreme conditions, DENSO's patented Iridium alloy is 6x harder and 8x stronger than conventional platinum and can handle temperatures in excess of 4,000° F.

Interesting webpage and their profit marge worldwide is growing.
So I will try to post results once I install them. Sorry, no dyno but I will report "seat of the pants" feeling.

I checked out the web page and the ITV16 spark plug shows it's for the 2.4 not the 2.0 engine?

You are correct ... here is another webpage that list our 2.0 L engine. Find My Part: DENSO Iridium and "ITV16" as the correct plug.

It appears they do use the same plug, but with different gap settings.
I did double check with both 'Denso' and 'Car Quest' when I ordered the plugs. They all confirmed "ITV16" with a .045 gap.

"ceeker" ... you had me worried ... glad I was correct of course.

I certainly will. But has anyone else tried them? I notice they are one of our sponsor's now.

They are not really our direct sponsor. I think the banner at the top is tied to Google ads. What it does is checks for text on the page and finds an ad that fits the subject matter. Pretty slick, and useful sometimes!

Yes, let us know how these work, I have been thinking of trying a new plug.

I may try these if they work for you!

Installed my "Denso" 'Iridium' spark plugs today!

For those of you who do not now me, I have never even changed the oil-filter in any vehicle I have owned. But today, I actually changed the spark plugs in my Sky RL! I must love this car .. YES!

It went smoothly, and took maybe a half hour including swapping out my K&N air filter. I bought two K&N's in 2007 so after doing the oil application on the freshly cleaned filter, it had months to grain completely so as to not foul-up the air sensor.

Back to the plugs ... Denso Iridium Power part number: ITV16.
Cost for 4 plugs: $39 + NYS sales tax $3.12 + freight to 'CarQuest' store $4.72 = $46.84

They do not come with the correct gap. Website claims, "small variations in factory setting really do not need adjusting because of the ultra-efficient firing power design will compensate for those variations".
But I wanted it to be .045 .. as it said the RedLine needed. So plan on very carefully increasing gap using a gap gauge. The 2.4L gap is .044 ... but I adjusted it for the RL .045.

These are taper seat plugs, so finger tight and then with a plug wrench carefully tighten only 1/16 turn!
I reassembled everything and started the engine up. It ran very smooth with no skipping or back firing. I took it out for a under-load test. Smooth pull with no negative I could sense. Success!

Did I gain horsepower? This Denso website says it is normal to gain some.( Privacy Policy: DENSO Iridium ) It does seem to pull smoother but a dyno (before-after) would be a true test. However, I am most pleased. First, I did it myself with no problems. Second, there does seem to be slightly more steady pulling than the AC Delco plugs. So I guess I gained some power but am just glad it runs smoother.

So, I give them

I used to work at NGK spark plugs at the test center in Wixom, MI. Spark plugs aren't going to do much in terms of HP gains, unless your old ones are totally fouled up. But, what is important, especially when racing, is durability. Time and time again I'd hear about "competitor's" plugs breaking lose the terminal inside of the engine while racing (due to high vibrations.) Eeks! That's not good. The Iridium plugs aren't much different than regular plugs in terms of HP gains, but, the big difference is that the Iridium will last a long long time before burning out.

Ha, I just looked at the link you provided. You're def not going to get 13.5 hp gain from spark plugs unless the old ones were baked in sludge. Puhlease...Denso, give us a break.

Yea, the whole time I was scrolling down, I was waiting to post that spark plugs don't really increase horsepower, but can cause the loss of horsepower as they deteriorate. Iridiums are supposed to last longer (I think usually they say 150,000 miles). I would rather change my plugs more often, but it is all personal preference.

cold weather report ...

It is 5*F outside with a biting 10 mph wind ... making it feel like a true -9*F!! So I felt I should try to start the car and report how the "Denso" 'Iridium' spark plugs performed in cold weather.

First turn of the key and 'snap' it growls loudly with my Solo fast-flo CAT, 3" pipes and Solo Mach exhaust! Oh the beast lives! So I run from a side road to a mid-level road and kick it ... smooth pure get-up and go! No back firing, no motor lights, no coughing or stalling ... just a smooth rush!

So after Christmas I will head south and will report how these plugs like warmer climates. But so far friends, I am pleased.

Even with the biting cold, I still drive to get a cup of coffee if the roads are cleaned up good. My car still starts up fine, idles fine and drives around fine ... but I noticed that if I gun it on the Turnpike gate it has a couple of times ... miss fired! But it is sooo cold out (even in the garage) I just cannot get motivated to re-gap them. And since on Monday the 29th I leave for Florida ... I figure I will just do it once there. I phoned six parts stores and was told Delco Iridium plugs are gapped, for my car, at .035!
So once I re-gap and test run it I will report back.
Merry Christmas & Happy Hanukkah to all!

I just phoned Denso office in California!!

Spoke to their techy department (1888-963-3676 toll free or 1310-834-6352 direct .. then hit selection 2) and was told to set it at factory recommendation. The .045 on their setting sheet is an average for various car's with certain guidelines.

So I will set it at .030 when I get to a warmer climate.
