topless driving---what to use?
Though dark of hair and eye (or at least the hair was until the last few years), my Tipperary genes have left me at the mercy of the sun all my life. In my overly macho youth I figured sunscreen was for sissies that were afraid of a little pain, but now that so many of my contemporaries are having chunks of flesh excised because of the sun, I finally figured out that maybe there's something to this. It seems that even an hour of topless driving leaves me so sun and wind burnt that I'm afraid it's time to break down and put on some kind of sun screen. Since I know little about these products, what, if anything, do the rest of you use?

Well KYGXP has some KY that most of us used in T2TR, ask IHAWK on that one.
SKIP uses the excess oil from his pets squirrels out the back of his abode. Ruthie told me she uses Virgin Olive Oil IHAWK just lets her hair go wild and it becomes her own umbrella. REED uses whatever any woman that is with him has, DARKWING decided to try the stuff on the road from T2TR MM just go's bare, his white hair reflects the sun. SKYBABY just adds more pink so she looks burned anyway. D2 takes the outfit off his toy sheep and wraps his head in it. Dengal just takes whatever shirt she has on and wraps it around her neck, and the front gets left open....sunburn there.... ChiliSky uses butter....makes the skin slick so as the wind hits her it slides off faster maker her car go quicker. FLYINGZ, uses fish oil from all the fish he catches LOL. BRIAN1969, uses his wifes hair products, plus her hair is nice and long and as it whips him from all the wind, it fans his head so he never gets sun burned as long as she is with him. RMFNSKY, well he gets burned no matter what he uses, mostly cause he is always in trouble from the woman on this forum yep I said it and I am sticken to it.......and the ones I didnt get to, I will do tonight.... Happy Monday everyone

Well, thanks for the application tip, Ruthie, but I already have an air compressor and spray gun.

Real nice, Chili!I never used to worry about sunburn either (I'd never heard of a black person with a sunburn), but my mom was always paranoid because of my red hair and freckles. Turns out she was right- a few years ago I got a really nasty burn while standing outside all day with no protection. Now I usually wear a ball cap when driving top down and if I plan to be out for several hours I break out the Aveeno sunblock. I keep a spray can in the car too just in case. Now I just need a gun rack and I'll have protection for everything at all times!

Seriously
I will answer in a serious manner, since melanoma skin cancer is not a joke. Any drug store or department store sunscreen SPF 30+ will be efficient. If you have any trouble with acne make sure your buying one that is oil free or just for your face. I like the NO AD brand myself since they are cheaper then the name brands and have the same ingredients and work just as well. The gel kinds are a little easier to apply then the lotion. The spray kind are good if you got your swimming suit on but messy if your just trying to cover your face, neck and arms. They do have All Natural sunscreen but they are pricey and if your driving in the evening several have insect repellent also which at a stop light when the mosquitoes swam it a good thing to have. I would not worry about waterproof since you should not get the interior of your Sky wet. I found one the has a sponge applicator so you just dab it on, works great for ears and face, don’t get it all over your hands. BTW You have to put any sunscreen on before you go out in the sun, some say 30 minutes before to be effective and you don't want to get the stuff on your fine leather seats in the Sky.

![]() Since I've had four surgeries as a result of melanoma, I should have treated this with a little more sincerity. My sunscreen (45 proof) came with a small travel size container on the side - just refill it as needed & it fits nice in my Kapparoo pouch. I re-apply ever 20-30 minutes.

We have a considerable problem with this here in Florida. My wife, who is also fair of skin, found this out on our first real excursion in G8TR.
Unfortunately, so did I, and I don't usually burn. Now we use an SPF 50 sun tan oil and reapply every 30 minutes to an hour. Don't want to have them start removing pieces from us, even if it is from our own stupidity. We usually apply prior to opening up the car and then we carry a small bootle of SPF 50 in the glove box to redo as we are travelling. Wear a hat, I know it messes up your hair, but it will save a significant amount of burn on your face.

As you know I got pretty close to the equator last year. As you also know, I have the Irish fare skin. In addition I have had numerous chunks (basal cell)taken out of my face and arms as well as the freeze process (probably 30+).
I asked my Dermatologist what I should use for my trip and his recommendation was Neutrogena, Ultra sheer, Dry Touch Sunblock, 55 SPF. I used it and I did not get a burn nor did I flare up any new candidates.

I use SPF 50, currently it is a tube of Coppertone. I have been using it for the last year, so cost really isn't an issue. The last time I got burned was the drive before I bought it.

I use the Coppertone sport 30 spf since its waterproof it doesn't come off when you sweat
I put it on before a ride and I keep a keychain size in the glovebox for touchups . Since I burn very easy also a hat!!!

I am very fair and use at least 30+ but prefer 50+ and if out more than an hour will likely burn. For all those twenty somethings out there...pay heed. I rarely went out in the sun in my teens and twenties..and I am REAPING the benefits in my forties. I have very little sun damage and no wrinkles (yet).

My $.02 from a decade out and about with large groups
Bullfrog seems to work best. I, prefer the spray to lotion. Just spray a bit in your hand to apply to face. Have tried them all while hiking, canoeing, swimming, biking... you name it. In or out of the water Bullfrog works very well. They also make a version of the spray that includes a bug repellant.
Also use a moisturizer or after sun product, hat or visor and wrap around sun glasses. |
