14 hours, 800 miles in a SKY

Well I drove my daughter from SoCal back up to her Army Post in Monterey today, and then drove back. It was a good trip. Some sun, some clouds, a little rain. I averaged 28 MPG going 75 or so for most of the way, plus all the mountain climbing and such.

Saw SPIRIT's twin heading east on the 46 from Paso Robles... A black Red Line was heading west around 4:30 PM. Also saw three Solstices.

The good news is that after 14 hours in the SKY (some of it with the top up) I came out pretty good. Not too stiff at all, even with the cramped quarters. (And my daughter packed all her stuff including Christmas presents in a soft duffle, so we were even able to go top down!) The SKY is actually a pretty decent distance cruiser!

Make it a third!

My wife and I took two trips this year in the sky. Las Vegas (3,600 miles round trip) and Orlando (2,600 miles round trip). We were gone a week each time. Packing was interesting but the travel was grand.

My face was tire from all the permagrin.

My wife and I went on a 3 week, 4,000 mile vacation this summer in the Redline. Two stops at relatives. I did reinforce the back with a lumbar roll. The Redline behaved perfectly with average of about 31 MPG.

A couple of weeks ago, I drove "Skylish" nearly 1,900 miles from the Phoenix area to Smyrna. It was all interstate because I didn't have time to enjoy the scenery.

First day was an early afternoon departure and we bedded down for the night in El Paso (lovely city). It was top down the whole way. I've had convertibles before and they do tend to wear you down with the wind, noise, etc.

Second day was El Paso to mid-Louisiana. We wimped out and had the top up. Long day but painless. Next day to Smyrna. Piece of cake until the Atlanta area and the traffic was just like home, slow and not pleasant.

The trip was smooth and easy. Averaged almost 29 MPG. I drove cruise control at the posted limit plus 3 or 4 and had no Highway Patrol/Sheriff issues. As a matter of fact, I was in a group of cars in either Mississippi or Alabama and a County Mountie jumped out of the media and snatched a guy who couldn't have been going more than 2 miles an hour faster than me. That's simply remarkable because he was in a non-descript sedan and our Chillipepper Red Sky screams "Gimme a Ticket".

I love that car!

I picked up my '08 Red Line in Connecticut, did some easy local driving for a week, dropped the oil and drove it back to northwest Wyoming in three days (2,450 miles). Great, enjoyable trip (but I still hate the cupholders!). Ray

You drove 2450 miles without oil? Man these Skys are tough cars.
