I thought it was a matter of the paint maker having a marketing name for a given color and the car manufacturer having the option to use that name or come up with their own for marketing purposes. For example the Merlot Jewel of my car is called Ruby Red by Saturn.

One of the members here, 27rings, put together a master paint sheet that addresses all the names for all the colors for all the years of Kappa production:

There is a lot of grey area in how things are designated but:

Pilot cars are generally the first cars produced on the production line with off-tool, off-process parts. They are usually intended to be sold, and are therefore given VINs.

Pre-production cars are frequently assembled off-line with prototype or hand-built parts, are not generally intended to be sold, and are generally not given VINs.
