Aftermarket Stereo Question

Usually I am very astute in addressing electronics. But one area I am lacking is GPS. I have an aftermarket deck that allows video input for GPS. However, I am not sure what name of GPS unit that is compatible with this functionally. Can anyone in the forum point in the right direction on the name of these units and how they look. I am assuming the units dont have a video display since the display is channeled through A/V of the aftermarket stereo.

A Composite video input can be used for anything that puts out composite video.I am not aware of any GPS units that have composite outputs.
Which Receiver do you have?

I believe I found the term. It's called an Add on GPS. There are a few universal ones I found, there was a Dual brand name model out there that also has 10gb of storage to hold music. So I am still looking. I still have the option of just getting a regular unit although, I dont know where I would put it.

I would suggest an all-in-one... because just as you would need to find a place for a stand alone GPS unit, you would also need to find a place to install the add-on GPS unit. Add-ons are usually another item to add into the center stack chassis... and seeing as at most we have a double din opening, you would need to either do some kind of modification, or hide it somewhere, which could also be difficult.

An example head unit and add-on unit here with a Kenwood pair.

Also, they connect using a GPS only connection in the back of the head unit... they do not use RCA style connections or any auxiliary jacks. It will also be brand specific as to be able to control the mapping software.

Again, my suggestion is an all-in-one unit like the Pioneer AVIC-D3 or AVIC-Z2... while Dual does make them as well... and they are cheaper, you do get what you pay for most of the time in car audio.

Not gonna buy a new deck, mine is not even a year old. Like I said, I found a few universal add on units. If I was able to put a 12 sub in my car, I will find a way to put either unit in there. If not, I will just forget it. But, I feel ya, it took me a month figuring out the best way to install my 12 inch sub.
