I was flipping through netflix earlier and came across an episode of Emergency, circa early 70's. As the crew turned a corner they passed a 76 station and there it was.... their posted gas prices... those are in cents, not dollars.
It's an iPhone screenshot, but still brings back 40 year old memories...

Back when gas was a quarter a gallon it was a good marketing ploy. Now that gas is around $4.00 it just seems silly. It's long past the time to jettison this pricing relic.

But nothing has changed...99 cents...1.99. Americans are so stupid also...they believe when it reads buy one get the 2nd one free...try to get the free one...free is free. How about the word included. The 2nd is included...it is not free. What is wrong with the BBB...it is so false. Free
means free.

Buy one get one free, aka buy one for more than retail and we throw you a bone.
I sold gas at 3 cents a gallon during a gas price war in the 60s
That is 1960s
The Sunoco station I worked at in the early '60s got down to $0.149 for 190. Then we gave up and lost to the nearby Texaco station.
Of course, included in that price was a clean windshield, oil check, S&H green stamps, lollipop for the kids and, once in awhile, a free piece of glassware.

where are you from origionally or are you including yourself in this statement? I only ask cause I was raised in Chile, South america, and I always had a problem with the tax thing. (down in chile the prices on the shelfs included tax but here 1.99 = 2.11 with 6% tax) so when I was a kid and had .99 worth of candy and handed the casher a dollar I never understood why they wanted more money....

There's a hotel not far from me that has a sign that says "Free Breakfast". I've been tempted to go in and ask for my free breakfast.

Was it 2.9 cents?
I remember those wars, but don't ever remember them being that low. About 15 cents in the Kansas City area is as low as I remember. I would drive up to the pump and tell the attendant to put in a dollars worth.
