it sounds more to me like where the actual steering wheel meets the steering column, there might be some plastic rubbing together, maybe some insulation or something. not really inside the steering column.
The noise is probably the clock spring that keeps voltage to the crash bagon the steering wheel. after a while the plastic hits the clock spring and makes that noise. Remember that the bag is loaded and not to be messed with by inexperianced people. It can and will go off in your face at great speeds that causes face rash....drive it or have the dealership play with it.....Skip.....
Mine started doing that last week. I noticed mine seems to do it only at certain times, like when I've been driving for a while as opposed to a 5 minute drive. I had it into the dealer, but they couldn't reproduce it, but of course, the morning after it was in it was doing it again.
Like yours, it doesn't seem to affect steering. Mostly happens when I make a hard left turn like at a low speed like in a parking lot. Sometimes it's a louder moaning kind of sound, and other times it's higher pitch. Embarrasing when someone is in the car with you and it's their first time for a drive
Mine, too, sounds like something rubbing behind the steering wheel somewhere. :willy:
Then again it might be a piece of flash when it was manufactured. It is just now showing up. How about a little vaseline with a cotton swab around the inside of the housing that moves around the fixed steering column?.....Skip......
i took some dental floss and "flossed" it. it seemed to help some. mostly i thought that maybe something had fallen into the crack.... i also sprayed some lithium grease in the "groove"..... still hear it somewhat, though.... just a minor irritation - don't sweat the small stuff!
The problem is under the hood, where the little adjustable post meet the painted part of the hood, there is hard rubber on the end of those, I purchased the self stick felt pads, the ones used for funiture to avoid a scratch, they are different sizes 1/4 to 1 inch, the two post near the windshield are the ones to try first, adjust down to make up for the thickness of the pad then peel and stick.
I solved my noise that seemed to be described in the thread above.
The sound was coming from the air ducts in front of the tires rubbing on the tires when they are turned sharply. Left and right air ducts where not “snapped” into the front “scoop” of the bummer grill, so they were sticking back into the wheel well too far.
I fixed the issue on my 2007 Redline. The ducts coming from the bumper back into the tire well was hitting the tires when I turned really sharp. I pull the ducts forward until they “clicked” into the bummer flange and reset the filler material around the duct through the hole in the tire well. 250 Miles and the noise has not come back.
Thanks Ray. I had the same problem with my 09 Redline. I tried the same fix (pull the ducts forward until they "click"). The driver side air duct clicked, but I did not hear a click on the passenger side. Hopefully this will fix the issue. I just did it two minutes ago so I have to take the car out for a spin and test if this worked. Thanks again.
Thank you for posting this information. Please keep us updated on these issues. If you have taken in or plan to have it looked at by a dealer, please send a PM if the service is not satisfactory. I hope this taken care of quickly.
