Anyone heard of an EVAPORATOR

My wife has a 2006 Infinity G35X...the red light goes on and she brings the car into Infinity...it turns out to be an Evaporator Pump or Vaccuum...anyway, what it does is clean the dirt from the gas...a gas filter in essence...well in essence...600 dollars later..OUCH! So, does everyone else like the whistles and bells! I am hoping the SKY does not have one of those....they r supposed to break down between 70 and 100 thousand miles.

Never heard of an evaporator in this context.

At first I thought it might be a new name for an Exhaust Gas Recirculator (EGR), but it doesn't sound close enough. Speaking of the EGR, the RL SKY doesn't have one because of the efficiency of our Direct Injection.

I also haven't heard of such a device

You wouldn't by chance be talking about the fuel gas vapor canistor. these are filled with activated charcoal and generally have a lifetime of 60 to 100,000 miles. They are part of the emissions system and absorb unburnt fuel vapor from the fuel tank and engine when the car is shutoff. Usually about the size of a 1# coffee can.
The system usually has a one or two solenoid valves to switch the engine vaccuum on the canistor.

Strange, I was just looking on the sky and I don't see it.I wasn't aware of it being phased out I'll have to consult the manual.

Edit: Found it, They moved it from the engine compartment back to the top of the fuel tank. You have to remove the tank to get it out.
At todays labor prices that would probably be pretty close to 500 bones to replace and test.

My Jeep's Evap Canister is in the rear wheel well.
I already removed it once and re-installed it myself due to my Custom Rear Lights on my Corner guards. I had to get it out of the way so I could drill without drilling into it.

On earlier jeeps, it used to be in the Engine bay. At least I won't have to worry about paying the labor if it fails.
That sucks.

Yep we got one ... oh and if you want to shorten the life, top the tank off ... aka put more gas into it after the pump does the auto shut off.

most cars since the induction of emission controls have a vacuum pump that helps decrease the amount of carbons that are vented to the atmosphere. Most of the cars that I have rebuilt they have been taken off of due to horsepower loss that they cause. But al of those cars dont have ECM's either. I am betting that our cars have such a thing and they are usually belt driven. Check under the hood and indentify everything and if there is anything left that you dont know what it is then it may be the vacuum pump.

Vaccuum pumps were used on carburated vehicles. Since all vehicles produced now are fuel injected the vaccuum pump is not needed.

You was robbed!

Unless they replaced your EVAP for your A/C unit. Although, they never really go bad.

If it was your charcoal canister. You were bent over and raped at the scene!

There is nothing besides the fuel filter and or the canister to mess with the fuel. The fuel pump just supplies fuel from the tank to the filter the canister is inline to keep fuel vapor from escaping.

Only the fuel pump I can see being a pricey replacement, but $600 you were raped. I would demand to see the old parts. Also it if was the fuel pump how did you drive to the dealer??

You must not have to pass emissions testing or you just haven't met up with an emissions tech that knows what he's looking at. The new cars are going to throw codes. You can't pass emissions if the car is throwing codes.

If the canistor is in the same place as the Sky the tank has to be dropped so figure 3-4 hours labor and probably around 60 to 100 bucks for the part if the dealer is the one doing the job. Thats approaching 500 bucks.
