Is this only on the 2008 model as I have not experienced this with my 2007?

Did your dealer check for air in your brake lines?

Nor I, works have always worked well for me. Is it only on start up? Maybe there is some air in the line or the Master cylinder?

I have the spongy brake problem and have to agressively slam on the brakes to get it to stop. Mine is a 2008 redline. I'm also concerned. We should file a complaint with the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

I recall someone else posting about this previously but I don't recall if it was about a 2007 or a 2008 or even a RL versus a base SKY. But there is another thread on here about someone backout out of their driveway and having braking issues at startup, etc.

Sounds like air in the break line. Take it back to the dealer for a quick fix.

Bad Thing to happen early in the Morning!

That would of ruin my day also Judi! Sorry about the dent hope its an easy fix. I have no problems with mine but its a 07, maybe we need a poll done on this to see just how bad the problem really is? I agree the cars having a leaking differential or stalling is NOT a safety issue this spongy brakes is a ISSUE! Just earlier in the week I saw were Chrysler has a recall on the Nitro's for a similar brake problem.

Ouch, not good at all.

I haven't had any problems with my Sky (2007 built in April 2007).

From what I read, it looks like a problem with the 2008's. See "mariposa916 - ABS Question" I would paste it here but I don't know how. I posted a new thread because I want to make sure EVERYONE with 2008's dosen't do what I did and think that it just needs to get broke in and the problem should go away. It appears that's not gonna happen. Also, after reading several responses I figured it was one of those things I was just going to have to live with but you can't always be focusing on things like this. One of those days your going to forget like I did and WHAM! Thankfully it was in my driveway and no one got hurt. Well almost no one, I've been sick about it all day. That's a $500. deductible I hadn't planned to spend.

My 08 Sky Redline does this as well. I had a older model SWII from 1995 that also did the same thing. I am betting it is considered normal. Just as my 05 Hummer H2 Loses power steering in parking lot manuvers. Thay replaced entire steering setup, pump, hoses box and all and no change. and the belt is not slipping either. Some vehicles have inherent Quirks. I can live with it though.

My 07 is NOT having that problem!! I would not drive it until that gets fixed.

I guess the whole waiting for the second model year thing means nothing with GM!

Ain't that a kick in the pants. GM fixes one problem on the 2007s and adds a new one on the 2008s.

The dealership is correct in their Normal statement since the reply is based on the brake engineering. The brakes are performing AS DESIGNED. Thus the issue isn't whether the brakes are acting "normal", but whether "normal" is a hazard or not.

The dealership can't do anything to fix this kind of engineering problem until the engineers develop a fix. Thus, don't go yell at the dealer. Lodge your complaint to GM/Saturn and to the NHTSA.

The only time you might need to re-engage the dealer is if this occurs after a good warmup period.

Ok, here is the question...if we didn't have this problem on the 07's and I don't remember ever seeing a post on it...what did they change in 08 to have this problem.....you would thing if this is normal we would have experienced it from the start..are the 08 N/A doing this as well or only the R/Ls.... .....seal9

It's my understanding that the brake vacuum has been changed on the 08 model, thus causing this "spongey" feeling in the brakes upon initial start-up. Mine does it, too. I posted in the other thread that I had a scary moment the other day as I was leaving a parking lot. The car had been sitting for several hours, and as I was exiting the lot, the brakes were very unresponsive. My car just sort of slid right past the stop sign and almost went right out into oncoming traffic. Luckily, I managed to get it stopped in time...but I agree, this IS indeed a serious issue that Saturn/GM must get resolved before somebody gets seriously injured or killed. From what it looks like to me, this issue is only affecting the 08 RL's...as part of this brake vacuum "change" involves the Stabilitrak system...or at least I thought it did.

That is an absolutely dangerous situation some of you have with your brakes. I would not accept needing your brake system to warm up as a justifiable answer. Please keep us posted about what you plan to due because of the accident. Glad you didn't get hurt when you hit the tree.

Report it to the National Highway Traffic Safety Board, invite them to look at this "normal" condition.
