Surprisingly the Jaguar XKE made that list and not the MGB or Triumph TR6's for that area.... In 1970 I bought a 1969 Mustang Mach 1 (In Mint Condition, 351 Quad Cleveland Engine) for $2,100.00.....

The write up on the Solstice/SKY is really stupid and lacking in any understanding of sales causality. But that's par for the course for just about any "money" magazine journalist because that's what they do.....state a figure/fact....then pull some statistic out of their butt as the correlating reason for the figure or fact.
"Stocks down because of a dip in oil prices"
"Stocks down because of a rise in oil prices".
"Beef prices dip as Obama visit McDonalds".
It doesn't matter. Take a fact and some data. Make one the reason for the other. Instant financial genius and journalist.
Back on car topic. To paraphrase the CNN article: Solstice sales soared until buyers found out about the quirky top and limited trunk space. WTF! "Hey Marge, I just lost my job, I'm behind on my mortgage payment, and GM is going bankrupt...let's go buy a SOLSTICE"! "Now George, you know we can't do that....it's got a quirky top and no trunk space". Sheesh.

It's also pretty evident CNN doesn't like American cars.
Or America for that matter.

"I hope it was mentioned before... but if you are going to write about certain cars, understand why sales tumbled... don't assume and write as fact. The sales of the Saturn Sky and Pontiac Solstice did not dwindle due to quirky tops and lack of space. In fact, GM only planned on selling 10,000 Sky's a year... so selling 16,000 in the extended 2007 model year was way above expectation. Both models sold half their expected runs in 2009 because the car companies factories were shuttered halfway through the year. If GM kept them in business... the sales would not have appeared so dismal."
Bogie, very well said. Talk about fat in the economy; we really need to see all the excess baggage and talking heads wrung out of the media industry ASAP.

Interesting choices. The MGB is a natural choice as the highest production reasonably priced sports car until the Miata.
The 240Z was a nice car (as long as you didn't live in the salt belt) but not really a budget choice.
They got it partly right on the Fiero - they did get it past management by building it as a commuter car, and then developed it into a performance sports car - only to ashcan it about 5 minutes after spending millions of dollars finally giving it the all new suspension it had needed from the start. The 1988 model could have been the beginning of some excellent sports cars if they hadn't killed it. Reminds me of the Solstice coupe, which had an even shorter life.
The Solstice write up is pretty much all garbage, as has been noted.
Calling the XKE a budget anything is ridiculous.
Calling the CRX and chop top Mini sports cars drives home the fact that these writers don't really have much of a clue what a sports car is.

This type of thinking may be good for us in the long run. I don't need the masses to justify my purchase. If the masses want to shun these cars, the market value will stay low, and I will likely buy a second one someday (I still have the original Solstice itch to scratch). Regardless of what the press says, the bang for the buck with this car is still good and for the dollar, I have not seen another car that I would rather have.
