Is anybody collecting their Sky? I'm planning on purchasing one in the next few months, but it's just something to hold me over until the CTS Coupe comes out. It'll be my daily driver......I never thought to "collect" this car, but am curious as to who is doing so.

We do plan on keeping this car a very long time. Mr. Mallett will see that the car runs after its 'natural' life is over. -mk

I had to laugh when a friend was talking to me about what I would be looking to get when I "trade-in in the Sky in a couple of years".
I keep my regular cars around for years - my grocery getter is a '99 GTP and it replaced a '88 Camaro - the GTP will probably be replaced in another year or two with a small hybrid SUV.
I bought the '08 Sky as a "toy" and I intend to keep it a very, very long time.
Hey - after all we still driving a '68 Cougar around.

I've always thought it was going to be a collectable
1) my redline is first year production vehicle
2) limited production run, 1st year less than 5K units
3) styling to stop a bus
4) fun as hell to drive.
BUT, I don't baby it; in 8 months I have almost 10K (s)miles.

I plan on keeping mine as a collectors item I drive it only in the summer and not more than 5000 per year. I beleive it will be worth something down the road but I still want to enjoy it.

Careful. You really don't want to try to stop a bus with your car. Trust me.

Nope. I don't have pics from Geo Metro vs. power company cable truck, so you'll have to take my word on that one.

Points that could turn the Sky into a classic -great performance, kick-ass looks, and not too many on the road.

Points that could turn the Sky into a dud -poor repair record, cheap & uncomfortable interior, and bazillions of them on the road.

Poor Repair record well I guess that eliminates the 60's E type Jaguar they spent most of the time getting tuned up
Sports cars frequently have somewhat experimental features some good some bad. It's better if there wasn't a zillion of them made though they become worth more faster.
I typicaly keep my cars for 8 years or longer. If I like em much longer and so far I like this one.

Remember the 1953 Corvette was way underpowered, only came in Automatic and the first five didn't even have sideview mirrors!

Try to buy one today...

Collectible? You bet!

I plan to keep my Sky for at least 10 years! I only put 3000 miles on her in the first year, and she stays in the garage whenever the roads are the least bit wet/muddy/snowy/salty. I've invested in enough microfiber cloths and bottles of detailing spray to keep her shiny for a long time.

My husband and I have owned (and let go of) a couple of collectibles in the past, and wish we'd kept them. Won't have that regret with the Sky!

Who knows...

You have to ask yourself what is "collectable". The mentioned 1953 Corvette is VERY collectable, my (purchased new) 1969 Dodge Charger R/T is very collectable, my 1954 BelAir HDTP (rare power seat and door window's) is collectable, my 1999 59,000 mile like new Mustang 5 spd will NEVER be a collectable car in my opinion. Collectability is in the eye's of the beholder I think. If the Sky's & Solstice have a short production life, and if not too many are built, the KAPPA'S may become "collectable" some day. We have a guy in our area that collect's the camper version of the VW Van! Who knows....

Every time I do an upgrade I keep all the original parts because I do think these cars will become classics. Even if they live a long life, there is something special about the early first-year jobs. Like a '53 Corvette or a '67 Camaro, or a '65 Mustang...

All of those were fun, not-overly-expensive, sporty cars - and gorgeous for their day, just like the SKY is today.

We don't think of it as "racing the car." We look at it more as "building provenance." -J

I try not to do anything that cannot be reversed to the car and I keep all the parts, books, window stickers and paperwork.
