Coolant temperature

So, being as auto uneducated as i am, have no idea what this is. Something to do with the radiator maybe? What's heating at Xdegrees when i read the gauge?

Also, when you start the car in the morning, at what temperature is the motor considered to be warm so you can drive away?

There are multiple coolant temp sensors. What you are seeing on the DIC read out is probably the coolant temp at, or near, the thermostat. If you actually keep an eye on the temp read out on the DIC you will see that the engine warms up VERY fast. The current wisdom is to start the car, idle it for a VERY short time (less than a minute unless it is quite cold outside) and drive away at a moderate pace. After just a mile or two you'll see about 140-170 deg and be getting heat from the dash. Basically, start the car, buckle up, tune the radio, and go drive. Extended idling is just a waste of gas and time. HTH.

I notice that my coolant seems to be running between 200 - 212 degrees, is that too hot?

These cars tend to run what we consider hot.
Even in winter my car runs about 195-200. In the summer add 10 to 15 degrees. . .

And SnaponBob -- you quoted exactly what I do... So it HAS to be right!

On the redline, this is how it works on my car. At first morning start up if it is in the 40's or better overnight, the car starts and holds about 1500 rpm. Once the coolant temp reaches 136 degrees, the car drops idle rpm to maintain about 800. That's when i drive it away.

If it's a really cold morning (30's and below) and the coolant temp rises slowly the car will hold idle at 1500 rpm for around 2.5 - 3 minutes before dropping to 800.

I was a little concerned as well... seeing my temp running between 199-210. That does seem a little hot. Wonder what temp. thermostat is in the Redline?

Yup, that's exactly what mine does, just didnt know it was correlated with the coolant temp as i have no idea what it is.

The thermostat opens at around 190 F, and the fan starts at around 215 F.
Using the air conditioner seems to start the fan sooner, since when I had it on I don't remember seeing any temps above about 210 F.
Having the heat on full hot seems to result in a higher operating temperature, but I don't know if that is fact or illusion.

I start out cold with very little idling, pretty much in line with Bob and Rick. I don't use a lot of throttle, and short shift until I see 190 F on the DIC.

For me. I "fall in" to the seat of the car. Start her up. Fish around for the seat beat. Tap the throttle lightly (if it is still at 1500) it drops immediately to 800 or so and slow off I go

Nah man. Your system is under pressure, that's why your coolant doesn't boil at 212. It's why your your radiator cap says not to remove when hot. Dramatically lowering the pressure on the system causes the liquid coolant to flash.

The engine systems are designed to operate between 190 and 220 degrees. Anything below 190 and the emissions systems and tuning are compromised.
