Cost of things

One 2008 Saturn Sky Redline with everything $31,845
One Plain Vanilla WindRestrictor $139.00
Front and Rear splash guards $99.42
Various car-cleaning supplies $217.85

Sporting a new Permagrin… Priceless

Okay... now for a few questions. I asked in the Top 101 thread but no one answered.

1. I see Saturn says to raise and lower the top by grabbing the side above the driver window. I see posts here that is very bad and you will bend the top, always do it from the middle front. Which is right?

2. How easy is it to latch the top when it's going up? It's really difficult to move the top all the way forward (yes the pins are in the B-pillar). I really need to turn the crank hard to pull the top all the way forward.

3. Do you really need to slam the trunk that hard? I make sure the top is all the way in the trunk by pressing in the middle, then the driver and then the passenger sides.

4. Does any one else have their tail lights fog up (condensation on the inside)?

The top will get easier to put up when you begin to break it in. You only need to slam the trunk as hard as it takes to close it. And, you should do it only from the center of the trunk to avoid twisting and torquing on the hinges. My tail lights fogged up a couple of times when I first got it and then stopped. Maybe the seals need time to cure. I always put the top down from the mddle front as it just seems to make the most sense.

I have been grabbing the top one hand at front the other at the back of the side window (say 16-18 inches apart?? And I pop it up or down into place.
Yes the pins: Lined up -- but the crank still is tight -- that is good - solid seal.
I tuck the roof in and slam the hood -- generally at the clear plastic -- I push it plenty hard -- but always make sure the top is all the way in.
I know we all tend to baby the car a bit – but it is metal and glass...

Second season -- no problems...

My tail lights were fogging up & the dealer replaced them.

Make sure that the windows are down when you are putting the top up - makes a world of difference.

It's right next to the button that opens the cover for the spare tire.

Great looking car. I suspect Sky Wife will be adding the same thing (minus the turbo) to our garage soon.

1. I see Saturn says to raise and lower the top by grabbing the side above the driver window. I see posts here that is very bad and you will bend the top, always do it from the middle front. Which is right?
You don't ONLY pull from the side. That will torque the top. Put left hand in front and right hand on side. You don't have to get the left hand in front center (it can be awkward for shorter folk and hurt your back). The more to the front you can get it, the better. But I wouldn't kill back and twist yourself to make it happen. Just get it at a front spot comfortable for your height. Then you bring it up,...don't dilly dally and baby it. Get it moving and bring it up and to the front in a smooth authoritative motion. You only need to use your left hand to get it up and moving about halfway to closure. If you do it properly, the top will have enough momentum to run the rest of the way, with a little bit of help from right hand.

Then check to make sure the B-pillars seat properly (see Top 101). This is one reason you don't want to baby raising the top. These B-pillar seats like to go in nice and firm. Not only does this properly seat the B-pillar slots, but it also takes the front pins further forward, which makes for an easier latch.

In fact, I go over to the other side of the car and makes sure the right side B-pillar is secure.

Quote:
2. How easy is it to latch the top when it's going up? It's really difficult to move the top all the way forward (yes the pins are in the B-pillar). I really need to turn the crank hard to pull the top all the way forward.
It does take a good torquing. If you don't do a good job in (1), the initial latch torque will have to do it for you. If you do a good job in (1), you will notice a much easier initial torque (and I believe a cleaner latch engagement), and then the same solid ending torque for the good seal.

Top Mechanism

I had a learning experience. While hooking up the electrical wiring for our Windrestrictor, I had to go into the guts of the top. If you look in there it looks like a Rube Goldberg
