Does anybody know, or have a guess as to, the purpose of the sort of rectangular area outlined on the top of the passengerside dashboard?

I just looked at one photo in the gallery and all I can see is the area where I assume the airbag will deploy from.

The top, somewhat mishapen, rectangle is the air bag. The bottom is the front of the glove compartment..

That's my thought.
