Florida EPass/SunPass

Any Floridians here that use either the EPass or SunPass transponders for the toll roads?

I switched mine from the Jeep and it's sporadic and inconsistent. Going around 417 in Orlando. Pretty sure I've got it mounted in the area it needs to be.

Hey there... I use my I-Pass when I am there.... it works great... I have had it in my Vue and the Sky.... just make sure you have ALL your vehicles registered to it.... I know I hate surprises in the mail with a nice pic... but, they claim there systems are never wrong..... so.... they take off the fines and I just pay the toll..... Best of Luck.......

I have mine mounted right behind the mirror at the top... works good there.... I have also just held it up on the far left drivers side dash as I went through.. never an issue. SkyBaby

I have a sunpass and have never had any issues with it in Tampa. Drove over to the Cape 4th July weekend via 417 and beeline and it worked there to. I just switched today to the mini transponder that sticks to the window (can't be removed) will see how that one works. I'm always afraid someone will steal the other one when the tops down.

No problems going up and down the turnpike, also mounted behind the mirror. Mine is also painted flat black because it didn't match the interior! Try changing the battery.

We have 3 SunPasses in the family. ALL work 100%. I have the original model with the small display window (& lights) which will tell ya when the battery is low, uses the AAA type. Wifes & daughters are the newer ones with the 3 triangle suction cup types. Those use button batteries, (round ones) and can be bought at any radio shack. With good batteries, never had a failure.. Try changing the batt.. We also put them just below the tint, front window, behind the R.V. mirror. If it continues to fail after new batt, then probably the transponder is defective, will need to buy a new one, only 25 as you know, cancel the old & xferr funds if any to the new one. Have you dropped yours lately?
PS: sometimes the problem is not the transponder, it is the reading device you go thru, that is why it is important to let them know what vehicles, cause they DO snap your picture AND they will send you a ticket..
Go here and register, it is easy and you can monitor account AND make changes etc etc.. Welcome to SunPass.com I have 2 accounts setup with them, one for my & daughters device, and separate acc for the wife..

I got the mini. You can not move the mini from one car to another. They must be stuck to your windshield to work. They do not beep. I placed mine behind my rearview mirror. It is $4.99 and once it is activated you receive $4.99 in toll credits.

Karen ... did you mount it directly behind the rear view mirror? In other words can you see it from the drivers side (about a pic?) Thanks!

I took a look at the Sunpass Website. It looks like it's saying the mini can only be used at Sunpass tollgates, but the Portable will work at ALL tollbooths (assuming the tollbooths are electronic). Do they mean nationally? If so, I just might get one of those since I travel all over the place.

Ok .... thanks Karen. I was just a little concerned about the position. Didn't know it could be placed behind or "inline" with the rear view mirror. Most descriptions I've seen said it needed to be positioned either right or left of the rear view mirror. Didn't relish the thot of it plastered on the window right in front of the passenger.

I have an EPass Transponder - but ran into problems a couple of weeks ago (NEVER had a problem in the Jeep), but didn't want to attach the velcro transponder to my NEW Sky windshield so just held it up just left of the rear view mirror as I was going thru the tolls. Got 2 "red light beeps" in between green lights. Maybe I should just try changing out the battery first but the transponder is only about 7-8 months old and used only a few times a month.

(Sorry mod's that this doesn't pertain to the Sky - this horse has been beaten enough I guess)

Unfortunately, those $5 stickys are useless for me. I use over $10 in tolls in one day sometimes.. For those people that rarely go thru tolls its probably good, or for tourists and out of state people, which probably who these things were made sold for. People who rent cars etc. The locals, as myself, need the auto replenishment when it gets below $10.. Another drawback is that once the stickys are done, if you don't have a back up, your screwed, with the regular one, even tho it says $0 balance on the account, you can still drive thru, and it keeps track to the negative, then once replenished, it subtracts the neg... No contest for me.. Paying for the sticky is almost like driving thru the toll and paying cash... especially with a $5 limit, for me useless since I can use that up just heading north one way to Jupiter, in fact, it won't cover a jupiter trip. .. For tourist, and people passing thru, perfect.. Another draw back, you don't get any of the discounts down the road..so you sorta like lose on the free money, we get discounts after a bit using sunPass....

hmmm..thats weird....$5.00 limit??? I set my mini to to replenish up to 20.00...when it gets down to 10.00. The mini allowed me to set any replenish amount. The instructions say..if you take longer trips on the Turnpike, we suggest raising your lower balance threshold so you don't run out of funds.

The directions just require it to be on the windshield...as it acts as an antenna.

And, with the mini...you save the same 25% at most toll plazas.

The regular Sunpass also has the location mounted in the same spots (on either side of the mirror). I use to just hold mine up and store it in the pocket on the front of the seat....never had a problem just holding it in my hand.

OK, let me try and get you guys some accurate facts. Yes, the regular transponder and the mini-pass works ONLY in the State of Florida, AND ONLY where you see the SunPass Logo on the highways. There are a few road, highways and expressways that DO NOT EXCEPT SunPass in Florida, 2 come to my mind that I have run into. 1 is the bridge over Card Sound Road in the Florida Keys, it cost $1 to cross either direction. ((The 2nd one is the expressway by Orlando International Airport heading east or west. (Can't remember now what pass they take, but it is different from SunPass, nor can I remember the highway number). Their pass transponder does not work on SunPass (as far as Know), & visas-versa (that I know)))<<This statement has been corrected below... In Florida, they ONLY TAKE SunPass AND only when you see the SunPass Logo and the green arrow pointing down to the SunPass lane and also they have SunPass Lane written in BOLD white on the SunPass ONLY road way as you approach the toll sensor mechanisms and cameras.... Period.

You have been mis-informed. IF what you have is this, Other Systems , then it DOES NOT and IS Not excepted in the State of Florida. IF I am sure, you try to use it to get thru tolls in Florida, you will eventually end up getting $100 (or more) ticket a pop for every toll you ran thru not paying. IF you scroll down on that Illinois page, you will see that they do have agreements with other states, specifically, those that use the E-Z-Pass toll system. If you look closely, you will see that Florida is not in that group of States. Florida does not except I-Pass NOR E-Z Pass on SunPass lanes.. Totally different systems, so beware.. That is why perhaps they created the mini-pass, for people just like you..Just passing thru and not a resident.. If you can prove me wrong with what I posted above, and what these respective sites have posted in I-Pass & SunPass, pls fire away..

There is a toll on the causeway from North Miami to Bal Harbor...maybe 135th street. No SUNPASS! They take something else...but forgot what it is. I have to pay a freakin $1.00 everytime!
