GM Strike Today?

Well, I was just wondering if there is a strike, how will it effect the availability of parts for our Sky's? Will cars allready produced be shipped?

On Strike now

Just got an E-mail, they called a Strike at 11 this morning.. I sure hope my car had already left the plant... If not it will be stuck there until the strike is over

To tell the truth I hope if it isn't already on it's way they leave it on the lot and don't try to get it throught he picket lines... Something may happen to it...

Just looking at the statistics, your car probably shipped early last week.

My dealer told me that it was probably waiting on the other 3 they had coming before it was being shipped... that was last thursday...
My real worry was I bought a car one time and it was built just a week or so before they went on strike.. It was put together so badly.. some bolts fell out the first week... the odometer broke when it turned over 1000 miles..
some welds were only half way welded... and the body panels were so misaligned... of course that was many many years ago...

If the strike last a while, I hope the unscrupulous dealer's do not start charging extra again. I thought we were over all of this, but if there are no Sky's on the lot, I am afraid we will see above MSRP's again.

That doesn't make sense. Did the dealer actually look up the current status code or just grab something out of the air?

They ship by rail car destination. It doesn't matter whose car is on the rail car or the final dealer destination.

No they come here by truck, they wait until they have a entire truckload coming to the same area along the route.. that is how it was with my first Sky.
I just got an E-mail from my dealer, and he said it will be here in the next day or two....
by the way the old status code system is no longer working... They can get the status of your car, but it is a more complicated process.

From The News Journal - Wilmington, Delaware :

...UAW workers from the Boxwood Road plant near Newport were seen leaving the plant soon after the 11 a.m. strike deadline announced by the union leadership earlier in the morning....GM has 1,526 hourly workers at the Newport plant, which assembles the Pontiac Solstice, Saturn Sky and Opel roadsters.

How is it that Toyota and Honda never seem to have employees going on strike? This sort of thing is such an albatross around the necks of GM, Ford, and Chrysler.

It is an unfortunate human trait, be it overt or subconcious, that when tensions exist between employee and employer, employees tend to not be on their "A" game.

Did you say you got an email today from your dealer? I can't even get mine to respond to my emails these past few days. Well, if your dealer said a day or two for your car, all I can hope is that mine is a day or two later.

Nobody benefits from a strike!

It is a lose, lose situation. I really hope the 2 sides can come to an agreement, I hate hearing all those workers losing pay every day, especially since mist people live paycheck to paycheck with all the prices of everything sky rocketing this year.

You need the next freakin Rockefeller to run this country like a business.

I vote for Donald Trump!

They're not Unionized. At least not to the extent of the big 3.

Workers at US manufacturers are unionized. Foreign manufacturers aren't, or at least very limited. The primary reason that foreign manufacturers don't have plants around Detroit or any other primary assembly plants is that they don't want union influence by proximity.

I doubt the strike will last very long. Strikes cost the workers, the union, and the company money. Though, GM can hold out for quite a long time with all the cars that are in inventory. Something like over 100 days supply. Much longer than the workers whose bills don't stop when they go out on strike. And $200 a week won't get you very far.

And the public is largely aware of GM's cost problems and have a much better perception on what unions have done to US manufacturers and the country over the years. Most of the public isn't going to be very sympathetic towards the union's demands so the unions have a public relations problem off the bat.

It is lose/lose.

But I have to disagree with the 'run it like a business' comment. At the risk of politiczing this conversation, part of the reason that things are expensive is because the result of the Bush 'Strong Dollar Policy' (his term) is that the dollar is at it lowest point in decades. Last week it reached parity with the Canadian dollar for the first time in about 40 years.

This means that imported goods are more expensive, and exporting goods made in the U.S. is more lucrative. The primary beneficiary of this 'strong dollar' policy is large exporters. Little companies and Joe Bluecollar lose.

I think US manufacturers need to do a "Ronald Reagan". By that I mean, boot the unions just like he did with the FAA controllers. Hire NON-Union employees just like foreign car manufactures have done and continue to do. Once one "major" car manufacturer does this, it will end the "high costs" associated with ANY production plants in the USA, especially cars and trucks. Perhaps then, these plants will return to the USA from China, Mexico, Asia AND all the other countries in the world. Pay a fair wage for a days work!! Screw the fluff-- Otherwise, manufacturing in this country WILL become extinct--If not already--Look at our steel industry--, wait a minute, do we still have one-- I believe Unions have become obsolete any ways, and in many ways. It was needed in the early part of our LAST century, HOWEVER, it is no longer a Useful tool IMHO--All it does is keep union coffers full of money for the mafia to live the "high life"--After all, what do the unions really do? besides increase costs for everything in this country-- Flame away--

Because this is a country of lazy and unmotivated, trying to get paid the most for the least amount of work...

I don't think that's it: Toyota and Honda build a lot of excellent automobiles here in the U.S.
