great brakes!

driving around 40MPH on a back road and a deer jumped out 20 feet in front of my sky. hit the brakes and it stopped in about 8 feet, solid as a rock. no skidding, squealing, pulling, or swerving.

after plowing my other car (Camry) through 2 deer and $5000 in repair bills it was nice to drive away without damage (uh... and to see the deer run away).

our skys have great brakes!

Unless you've got a 2008 RL, in which case this only holds true about twenty seconds after you start it.

Edit: Oh, and it's probably better to say our Sky's have great braking. You need good brakes for good braking, but suspension, balance, and tires also play a crucial role in braking. Good suspension and balance keeps the braking power distributed equally, and wide footprint soft compound high performance tires provide the grip.

District

I was driving down Wisconsin in the District and two idiots ahead of me cause everyone to brake hard. The brakes worked extremely well on my 2007 Redline.

I really don't believe it's possible to brake any car to a stop from 40 MPH in 8 ft. More like 70 ft, and that doesn't include reaction time. If a deer jumps into the road 20 ft. ahead of you while you are travelling at 40 mph, he's gonna be just about through your windshield before you can even get your foot off the gas.

40 MPH = 58.7 ft/sec
0.9g = 29 ft/sec/sec

d1 = reaction time distance = 0.75 * 58.7 = 44 ft

d2 = braking distance = 1/2 * (58.7)^2 / 29 = 59 ft

Total distance = d1 + d2 = 44 + 59 = 103 ft

More or less.

Not 8 feet, but I agree that they are great brakes. Or great braking.

Yeah, I was passing a group of cars. Cars were in right lane...I was in left. I admit my passing speed was a bit fast , perhaps about 30 mph faster than the right lane group. Well, someone decided they didn't like the right lane, and merged left right in front of me. Either didn't see me, didn't care, or just wanted to piss me off. I vaguely detected the first throws of ABS before I could let up about five feet off their rear. The really nasty part is I was on them as they straddled both lanes, so I couldn't swing either way; couldn't keep in left and if I went right (it was clear except for them) and they swerved back right...well, no where to go.

I probably could not have slowed so rapidly in a basic sedan. Of course, I wouldn't have been passing the group at 30 mph relative in a basic sedan either.

I've had a few short stopping adventures. With a hard downshift and brake application, sure you can stop pretty quick. It's the guy behind me that I don't always think about who is now the concern. I'm learning to check as I choose between "outs".

Thanks for the math, JRinKY. I didn't want anybody coming away from this thread with an unrealistic idea of how quickly they could actually stop in an emergency. Betting one's life on bad data has a way of not working out well.
