had a noob moment and need some help

i just installed a magnaflow 3" catback and the muffler comes wrapped in bubble wrap and the tips in plastic. well i took the plastic off the tips but i FORGOT to take the bubble wrap off the muffler so its kinda stuck on lol. ive got the outside layer of it off but the inside layer is still stuck from being heated and melted to it. i can get it off but it will take several hours of scrapping. is there some kind of cleaner i can use to get it off? i tried goof on or whatever it called but it doesnt work, i need something thatll sort of chemically melt the plastic but not hurt the stainless steel. any ideas?

A good, LONG run at highway speeds will probably burn off whats left. No different than running over a plastic bag and catching on the exhaust system. Saw lots of those come through the shop, customers complaining of a funny smell.

Naval jelly would dissolve it, but I don't know if that would discolor the chrome.

Most likely gonna have to burn it off. Gonna smell terrible for quite some time though. I had a bag sucked up and it smelled like plastic for nearly month.

i think all that is left from me scrapping it off is the very bottom layer where you can see the circles of the bubbles. if it burns off thatll be fine, i dont mind the smell cause i cant smell it most of the time, i just dont want it to leave a bad residue on it.

Last time I caught a plastic bag around my exhaust I hit it with oven cleaner to bubble it off. Test this in a small area to make sure it doesn't mess up your steel though. I don't recall any discoloration, but want to be safe here. Be careful spraying it so you dont get it on the paint or any rubber.

Acetone is a solvent for plastic. It also won't harm the finish like lye in oven cleaner.

I have read that oven cleaner gets it off pretty easily. I would avoid getting that on your paint though, but it seems like the easiest solution.

In all seriousness, last time i picked up a bag on the turnpike down here, it took 3-4 months for that dam smell to dissipate.. And then it left marks all over the muff..

I had this happen on my Harley, a little oven cleaner on the muffler and then heating them up should get your plastic off just fine without a scratch.

Good point with the oven cleaner. It basically works, but ya gotta be real careful. What about Carb cleaner? Can ya still get it easily?

I know at one time finger nail polish remover had Acetone in it, check the label. It worked on super glue.
