K&N Filter
Where is everyone getting their filter from? I called around and no one keeps it in stock. Looks like I'll have to order it.
Grr...I hate waiting!

Weird, huh?
I was told the same thing by every auto parts store around here. Won't do any good to order it since I am not going to be here to pick it up. They can't get it in before I have to leave & they will only hold it 3-5 days dependent on the store. So it will have to wait till I get back home.

I got my K&N filter (For the GXP / Redline) from Pepboys. It was a special order that I picked up in the store. It only took about 3-5 days for them to get it in. As a side note it works perfectly and I have had no CEL or codes thrown ever (7000 miles).

K&n
I have always ran K&N's but when I went to O'Relly they wanted $75 bucks for one!! I was not happy thinking K&N is great but raising the price by about $30 bucks pissed me off so I went to Pep Boys. There's was around $47 but they also had a Poweraddr for $27 even in Blue! So after looking at the specs I went with that instead. On the dyno it works and looks great on the end of my CAI.

Stock filter
Yes the stock filter is that price but if you look at the one for the CAI it is way higher. And as we have all read here there is a lot of controversy on the possibility of the CAI actually taking power away. My Dyno guy ran the diagnostic on the the MAP sense and with the fuel/air mixture on my car running lean already from 0 to almost 4000RPM then evening out until the computer richen it up around 6500RPM to cool things off. There was more air flowing through the CAI then the engine could ever use. Eloy said on there dyno they have seen a lose of as high as 2-3 HP with the CAI but after racing many different types of engines. Eloy as well as many other people know that even with a ECM controlled car some engines run different then others. On my car I don't loose anything going to the CAI but on others they might. Kind of puts a kink in the K&N warranty doesn't it.

K&N Filter Make a Difference?
I was wondering if you guys are talking about just changing the stock air filter to K&N air filter. If that is the case, I'm wondering if it make any difference in power or just a better air flow noise.

I have had the K&N filter in my 2.4 For aournd 6000 miles and my gas mileage actually stayed the same and on some days it is less. I went with it only since I can clean it and reuse it. i got mine from autozone and recieved it the next day

I got one. I don't notice any difference in power and didn't think I would.
However, and I don't know if its my driving style or what, but since I've put it in my gas mileage has plummetted. I was getting about 320 to the tank, but then I had to fill up yesterday and realized I only got 220 miles on the tank! Again, I don't know if its the filter or if I've just been "getting on it" more this past week. I'm going to drive with for about a month or so and then change back to the stock to see what happens.

Pepboys had it in stock and I do feel the difference when I kick it.
Warning.... when you need to clean your K&N .. the dealer warned me to not over oil it and besure it is fully dry or the oil will be sucked in and cover the sensors and cause problems. Go to NAPA Auto and they have a RedLine paper air filter for about $16 and I run it for a couple of days while my K&N drains extra oil out and dries completely. Happy Trails!

After i wash my filter and oil it,i'll hit it with the air compressor to get all the extra oil off, then let the filter sit for a few hours before using it. If you do get the oil into your sensors you can always use electronics cleaning spray which i think is alcohol based. You can get it at radio shack. If you do suspect this to be an issue, you'll know. Usually the symptoms are rough idle, high gas consumption, and hesitation when hitting the gas.

I just got mine in. I ordered the drop in lifetime filter - $69.00! I noticed a big difference in rain. The stock filter always hurt rain performance because it soaked up all the rain like a sponge which blocked airflow. With the K&N rain performance does not seem to be effected at all. The car seems to breath better. Overall, I'd say minimal overall power increase for drop in filter. Everything seems to be increased (bottom end and top end) slightly, but only to someone who has been driving the car for awhile. I think you would notice the difference more if you put it in a couple months after you purchased the car. My turbo does not seem to respond quite as quickly as it use to, but when I put the filter in, it seems to be much better. I wonder what this would translate into for a new engine?
Seat of the pants review? Kind of expensive for just a little increase from stock, but if you add in the fact that it is a lifetime filter, I would get it. It is also a good precursor to other engine mods because it opens up the breather on this engine while maintaining the stock cold-air condensing intake. Don't expect anything big if you are working with a stick engine. Benefits: my engine temp does not fluctuate as much, and engine responsiveness has gone up slightly, turbo effectiveness seems to have gone up very slightly.

One Week Follow-up
I currently have almost 25000miles on my odometer. I put the K&N drop in filter in my completely stock RL and here are my observations (in addition to my previous observations):
1.Wet weather and high air moisture levels don't seem to cause performance changes anymore. 2.Mornings don't effect performance anymore. I used to experience lack of turbo boost in the mornings 3.Engine temp does not fluctuate up and down as much, seems to stay for constant 4. Power doesn't fade on the 1hr drive home from work anymore 5. I have not noticed any gas mileage change (I have not been watching it yet, but nothing drastic) 6. No change in sound 7. Both initial and high rpm take off power are improved. 8. Power and response seem, to get better over a period of time rather then suddenly. There are sudden changes, but they continue to improve as you drive it over a few days. ONE WEEK RECOMMENDATION: definitely worth it, I don't have to deal with "thick" moist air issues, I get the same great performance in the morning as on a dry hot day, my temps are improved as is throttle response. If you purchase it, wait a week before making a final decision.

I got my new filter from NAPA...but NOT the lifetime reuseable one..just the standard replacement identified from the filter index book at the store. Is that bad? Does it make that much of a difference in performance if I just replace it everytime I change the OIL or would the lifetime filter be a better choice? I'm a bit confused 'cause I've always just replaced them everytime I change the oil and have never had issues with my other vehicles.
