Key Fob Single Unit Combination - has this been discussed before?

*Mods- please delete if this is old news*

Gang,
While searching for an OEM Saturn key on eBay, I ran into this auction.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/192001886605

I thought I'd take a risk, give it a try and see if it worked. Well, I received the fob, went to my local locksmith (FYI- the fob came with a card that read "program at dealership or check out a locksmith at autolocksmithfinder.com. Dealer wanted $50, local locksmith wanted $30)

and the locksmith was able to cut the key, program the key to the ignition and the remote to the car.

Key Fob was $13 and work was $35.

So for those of you, like me, who wanted the single key/fob combination, it's available for our cars now.

Warning: the fob is HUGE. Bigger than I expected. But even with this, I couldn't be happier right now.

Hope this helps,

*ss*

Just to clarify, our keys are self programmable. The Keyfob, needs a tech 2 or other electronic tool (available online) to program the keyfob without going to a dealership.

I looked at something similar a few years ago, but it was so big and the build was so chintzy I returned it. That one that I had (not sure if this is the same, but the button pattern would imply it was) just used the exact same circuit board as in the standard fob. So you could easily switch out the board with your old fob and no programming would be needed. Still need to get the key cut (Home Depot or similar), but then you can program the key yourself as davhamm said.

UPDATE: Just looked up my records. Mine was from mykeyless.com (via eBay) and was back in 2011 and it cost $39.95 (wow). I don't think it looked the same as yours, so I would be interested in what you think of the heft and build of the one you got?

This one has heft. It's a quality build. The locksmith couldn't believe I'd bought it new for $13. If you don't mind risking $13, I'd say give it a shot. I'm extremely happy with it.

Cool! Let us know what you think.

I might be crazy, and this might be the dumbest thing, but I'm really enjoying mine.

Please check if you can transfer the innards of your existing remote when you get it. (E)Inquiring minds want to know!

Looking at the two FOBs, the metal ignition key (that flips out when the upper left button is pushed) is like my VW fob. Thus, that is the reason (as Super Surg mentions) the new FOB is larger. Having experienced that combination, I kinda like the way it includes the key too.

Yeah, my daughter's bug had that same key, but the "ridges" were "inside" the edges of the key so the top and bottom edges where they cut the key were flat.

If I was tall or drove with my right leg bent w/ my foot flat on the floor, I might worry about how far it will probably stick out of the ignition. I will probably use this setup as my spare.

For some reason my fob was sent to the wrong PO (exact opposite of the one that's 6 blocks away), and I will have to wait until Monday to get it. I called the PO that it went to, and was told they couldn't pull it so I could run over and get it. Boooo.....

I have a locksmith lined up - $45. I'd like it cheaper, but there doesn't seem to be another 'smithy around here to do it. I called the dealership and was told that they "don't usually do it, it takes awhile for our tech to....": I cut him off at that point. Done.

If the innards swap over, and if it doesn't stick out too far, I'll order another, wait to get the locksmith to cut me 2 keys, and swap the guts over to the 2nd one. If it stick out from the ignition too far for comfort, I'll just use this one as a spare. I'll post after I get the key cut - probably Wednesday. Thanks USPS/seller, I could've had it done today.

I got the fob, and the distance it sticks out from the ignition won't be an issue for me. It really does seem to have a pretty nice fit and finish.

I'm waiting to hear back from the locksmith. Hopefully I can get this thing cut and programmed tonight.
