Well, while I'm still looking for a sponsor to install a roll-cage on my car, so it can legally run at the drag strip without being kicked out (new england dragway will require a convertible that runs faster than 13.49 sec to have a roll cage)..........I met a rep from Rockford Fosgate at a car show. They were really interested in building a booming sound system for my car, but I told them that I just need a simple set-up that will be more for Sound Quality, than SPL. In addition, I don't want to add too much weight on my car (lighter than 100 lbs or better). The POWER amplifier is their top of the line but weighs at least 15lbs. That's why I requested that I get their PUNCH amplifier since they weigh less (about 7 lbs). They wanted to supply me with bigger subs......but a month before I met RF rep, I already talked to Martin of GMRoadster, and ordered his Kicker sub and enclosure. Hey Martin...you are a great guy....thanks for helping me with all my requests and subwoofer changes!
Due to the limited space of the SKY, and trying not to add TOO much weight, having one sub is the most that I wanted to do. So instead of adding another sub behind the driver's seat, RF gave me a pair of I-beams, which really adds the feeling of the bass inside the cabin. Actually, a subwoofer is not needed if you have them, unlike those bass shakers. Plus they don't give any distortion at all and only weighs 2.5 lbs. I mounted them underneath each of the car seats!
So my set-up is:
RF 500.1 bd - that runs the pair of I-beams (400w rms, 2 ohms)
RF 500.1 bd - that runs the kicker sub (400w rms, 2 ohms)
RF 400.2 ab - that runs the component system (100w rms x 2, 4 ohms)
RF 2 farad capacitor
RF wires
XS power s680
Battery isolator
Stinger voltmeter
Since my car battery is very small (low numbers for reserve capacity, CCA, max amp, and etc)........I installed a capacitor as well as a small XS power car audio battery. It is a deep cycle battery that will keep my voltage stable, low esr, and enough juice for my sound system when I'm not driving. I added a battery isolator to make sure that my Braille Battery and XS power battery (parallel to each other) will not be killing each other. It is not recommended to parallel batteries that are different (brand, size, kind, amp/hr, age, etc.)...lots of negative things will happen (drain each other, charging rate will be negatively affected, etc.)
My RF rep also made a few calls....and was able to hook me up with Dynamat's lightest product in the market. It is called
Dynamat Superlight Series. You can cover a whole car with this product for only 30 lbs! I only applied these mats on both doors and those metal wall behind the passenger and driver's side to have a better sound....and avoid unwanted noise from vibrations. Only 8 lbs total.........
This whole sound system set-up added ONLY around 70 lbs. I'm very happy with the result. Deep bass that you can FEEL.......and excellent sound quality.
Those people who are weight conscious on their cars, this set-up might be a good one for you.
I added the DDM trunk light.....and very useful for NIGHT car shows....since it will really showcase my sound system.
I also stacked those three amps on top of each other and neatly tucked in the wires to have a show quality look. These amps dont heat up after 5 hours of using them (driving to PA from RI).....but to make sure there's no over-heating, I'll add a fan tomorrow. If I don't stack the amps...they will just cover sooo much space on the trunk....and will lessen the trunk space...and my wife will kill me ... lol
adding this sound system, will definitely add more points to my car during car shows. This is the only department that I get ZERO points from the judges....
