Lipstick's Sound System

Well, while I'm still looking for a sponsor to install a roll-cage on my car, so it can legally run at the drag strip without being kicked out (new england dragway will require a convertible that runs faster than 13.49 sec to have a roll cage)..........I met a rep from Rockford Fosgate at a car show. They were really interested in building a booming sound system for my car, but I told them that I just need a simple set-up that will be more for Sound Quality, than SPL. In addition, I don't want to add too much weight on my car (lighter than 100 lbs or better). The POWER amplifier is their top of the line but weighs at least 15lbs. That's why I requested that I get their PUNCH amplifier since they weigh less (about 7 lbs). They wanted to supply me with bigger subs......but a month before I met RF rep, I already talked to Martin of GMRoadster, and ordered his Kicker sub and enclosure. Hey Martin...you are a great guy....thanks for helping me with all my requests and subwoofer changes!

Due to the limited space of the SKY, and trying not to add TOO much weight, having one sub is the most that I wanted to do. So instead of adding another sub behind the driver's seat, RF gave me a pair of I-beams, which really adds the feeling of the bass inside the cabin. Actually, a subwoofer is not needed if you have them, unlike those bass shakers. Plus they don't give any distortion at all and only weighs 2.5 lbs. I mounted them underneath each of the car seats!

So my set-up is:
RF 500.1 bd - that runs the pair of I-beams (400w rms, 2 ohms)
RF 500.1 bd - that runs the kicker sub (400w rms, 2 ohms)
RF 400.2 ab - that runs the component system (100w rms x 2, 4 ohms)
RF 2 farad capacitor
RF wires
XS power s680
Battery isolator
Stinger voltmeter

Since my car battery is very small (low numbers for reserve capacity, CCA, max amp, and etc)........I installed a capacitor as well as a small XS power car audio battery. It is a deep cycle battery that will keep my voltage stable, low esr, and enough juice for my sound system when I'm not driving. I added a battery isolator to make sure that my Braille Battery and XS power battery (parallel to each other) will not be killing each other. It is not recommended to parallel batteries that are different (brand, size, kind, amp/hr, age, etc.)...lots of negative things will happen (drain each other, charging rate will be negatively affected, etc.)

My RF rep also made a few calls....and was able to hook me up with Dynamat's lightest product in the market. It is called Dynamat Superlight Series. You can cover a whole car with this product for only 30 lbs! I only applied these mats on both doors and those metal wall behind the passenger and driver's side to have a better sound....and avoid unwanted noise from vibrations. Only 8 lbs total.........

This whole sound system set-up added ONLY around 70 lbs. I'm very happy with the result. Deep bass that you can FEEL.......and excellent sound quality.

Those people who are weight conscious on their cars, this set-up might be a good one for you.

I added the DDM trunk light.....and very useful for NIGHT car shows....since it will really showcase my sound system.

I also stacked those three amps on top of each other and neatly tucked in the wires to have a show quality look. These amps dont heat up after 5 hours of using them (driving to PA from RI).....but to make sure there's no over-heating, I'll add a fan tomorrow. If I don't stack the amps...they will just cover sooo much space on the trunk....and will lessen the trunk space...and my wife will kill me ... lol

adding this sound system, will definitely add more points to my car during car shows. This is the only department that I get ZERO points from the judges....

Another great addition to your car. I'm looking forward to seeing (and hearing) the latest.

Looks pretty beefy w/o completely taking over the car the way some high end installers do.

I was curious about the dynamat on the doors...I have a large box of a similar product and was wondering about adding some to the sky to make it quieter, but its a convertible! I have not driven my car yet but wondering if people think this makes sense since the top even up is probably pretty noisy in comparison to a sedan. Obviously you think it will help enough to be worth the effort/cost....

BTW, since you are concerned about weight, from what I've read the dynamat type products can dampen the vibrations w/o covering the entire surface. The object is to just lower the dampen harmonic resonance to lower amplitude and the lower the resonant frequency. If you have torn your cars down as I have you have probably noticed on the back wall some patches of sound deadening material. GM strategically placed.

That said, if you are installing it it does seem to add a "barrier" effect as well dampening the resonance of panels , and for this function the wall to wall install you did in doors looks great. I was curious if any was installed inside the doors? I'm just a rookie on this lately (my car audio days were before MP3's, video and 1000 watt amps) but took acoustics class and know enough to be dangerous.

I bought a box of this stuff for a car I bought but then it was ragged out a bit more than what I thought and questioned myself on the effort for an older car that was already pretty decent sounding, and my van is nearing the grave with close to 200k and various issues, so it remains in the box...

yup, it does make a difference.

I laid down the dynamat on the inside and outside part.....and not the inside. If you knock on my door and compare it to yours......You'll HEAR the difference.

Even when driving, there's no rattling when the bass hits, and the sound is better.

convertible or not, if you want a better sound system, having dynamat or similar products, WILL make a difference.

Now you lost all your weight savings from all aftermarket upgrades like wheels, exhaust, battery, etc

And added 0.1s on your ET Antonio you should be one of the lowest ET owner's sky so stop ruining it.

I always get mad when I see people with high level performance upgrades going with audio systems, all you have to hear from a car like yours is the sound of the engine.

I know what you're saying bro. I can't even go to the track anymore until I get a roll cage....they kinda banned me. So F, them! lol. I'll go to a different venue for a moment, until summer comes again...hahaha! Plus my OEM clutch is already toast......still waiting for ddm for their stage 3 clutch.

my car is not 100% track/drag car. I go there to have fun ......

My other hobby is going to car shows.....

Plus my car is a daily driver.....even during snow. So that extra weight especially at the back, will help me get traction this winter

like what I said, I'm adding the system, to get points since I always get zero from the judges at the car shows

I installed this basic system......so judges won't see any weakness on my car during car shows.

With the same kind of set-up (around 1000 watts RMS w/ sound deadening material).....if I didn't pick the lightest stuff out there.........instead of only 70 lbs.....I'll probably be ending adding 150 lbs. So no biggie.....

Plus I can't say NO to freebies!

By next summer.....I'll either have Bride or Recaro carbon fiber seats.....so that will save me some weight

Yes, after hauling some of the sky seats around from my project cars as recently as last night I can attest they are fairly heavy, probably in the 30lb + range if not more.

I agree.

When I removed the seats to install the I-beams......they are about 35lbs! Heavy stuff!

With a 15 lb carbon fiber seat..........that will be about a total of 40lbs removed....
