My first three finger salute!

Some people must live rough lives, and the sad part is they probably bring most of it on themselves.

Left lane on four lane interstate.
I'm behind a Chevy suburban chugging along at about 60.
Nobody in front.
Nobody to right.
About five or so cars stacked up behind me.
We travel like this for about a mile or two.
So I flash 'em.
Driver throws left hand out the window...and shoots me the bird
I just smile.

So I merge right to pass, and I notice a big puff of blue out the back of the Chevy, and see it hunch down on rear suspension. He's floored it All that anger. ...oh my.

Now, I know the correct thing to do would be to just ease up off the throttle and let him go, but...well.....it was a nice day....top down...my turbo spooling up.....A bunch of blue exhaust swirling around....I've got the "itch"..... so awaaaayy I go.....only took about four seconds to make the pass.

Ooops, I just figured out I posted in the wrong forum. Meant to post in General.

Sounds like a typical day in Metro Atlanta rush hour traffic to me!

It is amazing how quick these cars go from 65 to 90.

It was obvious this guy had an axe to grind before I ever showed up, but it would be nice to figure out really what folk like that are thinking. Are they cognizant of the stack of cars building up behind them?

I have a basic rule for myself when extending courtesy to other drivers. If no one is in front of me, and I can go right, no one is ever close behind me. BEFORE you get there, I'll be going right (and signaling that intent too). If I'm passing a group of cars and I see a gap opening ahead, I'll signal right before I get to the gap so the car behind me doesn't feel compelled to squeeze pass right once they are clear but before it's safe for me to change lanes right.

I do not expect other drivers to have high SA, so I understand when I come up on the rear of another driver, they might not even know I'm there. So I try to be cool about it. I'll sit there for a while...check to make sure no one is front or 'em. Check to make sure they have opportunity to move over. Take my time. At this point it becomes clear they either don't have a clue, or are not paying attention. I'll flash 'em (I guess some people see that as aggressive, but it's really just to let people know you're there...no problem). If that doesn't work they either REALLY don't have a clue, or don't care. Or, in my case above, they're pissed. In fact, in some regards I prefer the pissed because by giving me the bird I then had good information the driver was aware I was behind them...which actually makes the right hand pass more safe because my big worry otherwise is if they don't know I'm there for the past minute or so, will they see me passing right? And if not, what if they decide to go right at the same time (without signaling, of course)? This is one reason the right hand pass is so dangerous, not to mention on four lane interstates it can mess up anyone two lanes over passing left.

So I really wonder what goes on in the mind of a person who not only does not extend the common driver courtesy to move out of the left lane when cars are behind, but is downright angry about it to the point of speeding up to deny the right side pass. Maybe he just wanted to see what a SKY could do?

forkee, when I saw the blue exhaust the first thing that popped in my mind was rings and oil. Well, actually, it was the second thing. The first thing was "Damn, he's floored it." I could tell the fact he was speeding up more from the exhaust and the suspension than I could from the extra speed seeing as the relative speeds still reflected the fact I was passing him.

I've learned to just pass them when the other lane is open. Although one time right after passing someone, I pass a "Keep right except to pass" sign and pointed at it. People tend to act like the way they really are while behind a windshield.

My daughter and I went to Sam's yesterday and I was about to park and this lady going forward gave me a look like she just had a bite of #2 sandwich. Like I would turn left in front of her out of no where. So I see her inside the store and I figure, "why not return the favor". She's grazing on one of the free food stands like it's her dinner. I say to my daughter in a loud voice, "There's that mean old witch that gave us a dirty look". Maybe immature on my part, but I felt better.

Ya the people that use the passing lane (fast lane, left lane) as a traveling lane really

They need to learn that the left passing lane is NOT a traveling lane!

You use it to pass slower vehicles, and then when you can get over you get out of the passing lane and use one of the traveling lanes!

The ones doing 60 in the passing lane on there cell phone without a clue of whats going on around them are the most annoying!

People in Michigan will support me on this one. I don't want to start trouble here so I won't mention the other state's name . On the interstate when I get in a bottleneck with in the left hand lane being blocked 90% of the time it is someone from that state. I thnk they teach them to drive that way in drivers training school.

In New York State ... legally the 'Left' lane is stated as the 'Passing' lane and not the 'driving' lane.
But folks that get up each day and self designate themselves as some authority and become a 'speed-control device' ... they should be ticketed.
It is these folks who create more road rage, risk taking, bottle-necks and often accidents. When I see a cop on break or socially ... I urge them to clamp down on these road-rightous a$$ holes and enforce the law to keep the 'Left' lane open for passing.

My first salute in the Sky was from a lady in a minivan, who took both hands off the wheel to offer me double fingers (for the price of one!) as well as screaming at me through her window.

S/He who hesitates is lost - don't turn your signal on, wait, wait, and wait on an empty lane, and then get irritated when I speed up to get on the ramp. She took so long I figured she'd talked herself out of it and forgot to turn off the signal. I understand a certain level of timidness and gave her plenty of time to make the change, but that was insane - I just smiled at her and blew her a kiss.

Not reacting with anger in return tends to throw them off, and provides a measure of amusement as well as less stress.
