My Quest to reach the Sky

Read a newspaper article about a guy who built his own airport and just received FAA clearance to use it...
His first customer?
The Goodyear blimp! Armed with the article and Google Maps My BIL and myself drove off into the far South suburbs of Chicago. Then, after an hour of searching we saw it!
Could not get closer - sorry...

Cool. There are a couple of housing "developments" close to me where they built the houses on either side of a long clear stretch of grass. They have basically made their own runway that runs between all the houses. Most of the houses have a large metal building as well to store their plane. Most of the planes are single engine Cesna's or Piper's.

Thanks for sharing.

I'd certainly fly there...looks a lot less crowded than O'Hare!

You just don't see a blimp on the ground everyday.

Cool pics, thanks! Yeah, that looks like the type of airport where I'd like to go...to avoid delays.

This guy spent his own $$ to build this place - it has concrete runways and all. It cost millions.
The funny thing is the only way TO the airport is through his house plot. So you drive up his driveway and meet a double locked gate... And dogs -- lots of dogs - on the other side...

This reminds me of the farmer close to the town where I grew up. He made a runway in his alfalfa field and had a Cessna, which he used mostly for fun. My friends and I would go out on the grass runway, after a light dusting of snow, with a pickup, a rope and a pair of snow Ski's and Ski the runway. If we really wanted to be adventurous we would sneak some snapps from his home brew.
