Passenger Side Airbag Disable?

Hey Sky Fans,

I have a Sky on order and hopefully will be driving it before Thanksgiving. I rented a Crossfire Covertible and it had a passenger side airbag switch to turn it off. I have two daughters, five and seven, and will want to occasionally take them with me.

Question: Can you turn the off the passenger side airbag, and if so, is there anything in the owners manual discussing child passengers?

Thanks
Pdlounge

If your daughters weigh more then 30 pounds no, it is automatically turned on. There are several pages on airbags and the dangers and benefits.

The weight is actually ~60-90lbs although I'm not sure of the exact number. My son is ~60lbs and with his car seat the air bag is still off. You may want to do some research as well on the neccesity of the feature. There where some articles on the site regarding this and some government studies that indicated the risk if any, was much lower then what is advertised. You'll have to make your own decision on that, but both my kids enjoy top down driving in the sky.

All 2007 Sky's have the gel pack sensor in the passenger seat (AKA Passenger Sensing System). If nobody is in the seat, the airbag system is off.

If anyone under 90lbs is in the seat, the airbag system is off.

Anyone over 90lbs the system turns on automatically.

Hope that helps!

The SKY passenger seat sensor is not solely related to weight. I understand that it is actually a mathematical algorhythm that takes into account both weight and seat position. Accordingly, depending on the distance the seat is from the airbag, it might come on if a 90 lb. person was in the seat sometimes and may not others.

Here is some info...

Here are a few links for your information:

Click HERE for a GM TV Video Demonstrating how it works

Click HERE for GM's Description of the System

Also note that the system is smart enough to know if a child seat, a box or just a heavy bag is on the seat. The pad inside the seat will give data depending on the shape of the object on the seat and if there are "weird" pressure points to determine if it is a person or just an item.

HTH...

Regards,

BA...

you mean this thing can tell the difference between my butt and a bag of groceries!? what about skinny butts vs big butts? didn't realize there was so much tech in my passenger seat. Wish they would used some of that money for lumbar support on the driver side instead.
