Plastic strip above front tires

Today I was showing someone how the hood opened to the front and discovered what looked like rust starting at a point just above each of the front tires. A closer look found about an 2 inch by about 2 foot flexible plastic strip along the under side of the hood. Is that suppose to be removed? It appears like the adhesive used on the strips turned to spots of rust or what appears to be rust. What is the purpose of the strips? Has anyone had the same problems? The only way to detail that area would be to remove the strips. Was thinking about putting the SKY in a car show but not until I get an answer to this problem. Help?

Is this the clear plastic tape along the top lip of the wheel opening? If so, I believe it was placed there to keep the plastic wheel well from rubbing the paint off the underside of the hood.

That is correct...3M tape strips were given to us at the Mecca Tour for that exact purpose...no pics r needed.

When I first heard of this tape, I checked and I had it. I just showed someone my engine two or three days ago, and the tape on the left side has vanished without a trace. Has anyone else had this happen? A lot of fine sand seems to get in there and of course it will rub between the wheel well top and the inside of the hood there and act like sandpaper. I need to know a good source of a similar tape to replace this. Where do you get these 3M tape strips?

I've only looked under the hood twice in 11 months, so now I have to go open it up again. Not sure if I'll see any dark spots under the tape as mine is black.

BTW - thanks for installing my new horn! Haven't had to use it yet (not that I'm complaining).

This is suppose to be there. The earlier models didn't have it. Visiting the plant during the Mecca visit, they were giving the 3M strips out to be placed under the hood because of rubbing against the hood which may remove paint and cause rust.
