Does anyone know how much power is available in the in dash power port? I want to use this port to power a transceiver.
The maximum draw when transmitting is 8.5 amps.
All I know is if you pull too much current through the thing you can damage it but what constitutes "too much" I have no idea. I know I burnt mine out just using our air compressor too much at autocross.
Surprisingly...I have two (accessories) because of my Opel cigarette lighter and all work well together. My power to the door lighter is vampired to the accessory wire. I believe that outlet is a constant. Can be used without the ignition on.
FWIW: The outlet capacity is 20 amps according to the owner's manual.
Most of the plugs I have seen are rated at 10 amps, with only a few (described as "heavy duty") that are rated at 15 amps.
It is very possible that the heat that damaged the outlet came from the plug or the plug/outlet interface rather than the outlet itself.
