Production Numbers

The salesman at the dealer informed me that they are only making 25,000 (or was it 15,000) skys this year. This number seems very high to me. I was told they were not officially doing GMS pricing on the sky's because of the low numbers, But my Ion Redline was one of 1500 and I tought that was a low Number

So I guess the question is, How many Sky's are actually being built, and is this 25000 number including the Opels?

If these numbers are wrong don't bash me, bash the salesman.

The SKY has always supposed to be a small numbers car.
The annual market for roadsters is around 100-120,000
The actual numbers may vary -- but 10,000-15,000 SKY is all you are going to see in a year.
As far as your 1500 Ion Redline -- sure -- but how many Ions over all?
SKY Redlines were originally to be only 16-1800 a year (we'll see)

Oh and remember there are 16,000,000 new cars each year so 20,000 is a VERY tiny number

Calendar year 2007 Sky production was 14,735. Add in 4,109 units to cover the Opels. 24,049 for the Solstice.

So just how rare is the Red Line for 2007 year model? Thanks for the info just wondering just how many were made so I can see how rare my RL is.

GM doesn't break down models with this investor level info, so we dont know the breakout between 2.4 and 2.0. I don't remember when the build ratio switched to predominantly RL.

Also, didn't they combine the serial numbers for all Kappa cars?

There must be somewhere to get an accurate number of 2.4 2.0 and opels. They have to keep track of inventory it is just where to look or who to ask.

Yup. Beginning with build year 2007 basically, IIRC. That gave us Sky specific vins different from Sols for the first build year before all Kappas merged as we were on a different model year for a while.

I'm pretty impressed by your dealer's confidence in their ability to sell the car to someone else. I would never think there would be so much demand for convertibles during January in Colorado.

I would call around to find a dealer that will do GMS pricing, though there's a pretty good chance you'd have to leave town- a lot of areas have several Saturn dealers that are all under the same ownership. The savings would buy a whole lot of gas, and the second half of the trip would be a whole lot of fun.

I'd be willing to bet that if you find a dealer that will do it and happen to mention to your current salesman that you're going to go a couple hundred miles away to buy the car, they'll suddenly start offering GMS pricing. If you decide to try that approach, I'd recommend the end of the month when they want to hit numbers and get it out of their inventory.

Actually they sold 2 the day I bought mine. They did offer GMS. Total profit for them was $-2600. Here is why, as they explained it to me. Dealerships pay 8% of the vehicle invoice monthly to GM just to have the car sit on there lot. Take a car like the sky in January, They will do what they have to to get that car gone cause it costs them 2400 a month just to sit. I got GMS, more for my trade in than I should have, plus the incentives and loyalty bonus.

So over all they lost 200 on the sale of the car to me. But with my trade in on my Ion Redline, they will make that back and then some. They still profit, and I get the car cheaper.

Ok, not only does Dave get rid of the Redline, but he picks up a Sky, and is following me to other boards too now?

Congrats on the new purchase my man. I wondered production numbers too, so this thread helped shed some light on things.

We need to get together next time you happen to be in Orlando

Thank's for these production number's. We 'snagged' our late (build week May 21) 2007 Redline, and I have wanted to find out how many 2007's were built ever since we bought the car! In May, our Saturn Dealer said the production goal for 2007 Sky's was forcast at approx. 9,000 unit's. They went on to say their three dealership group expected to get 3 Sky's per month! Not sure if they meant 3 ea. per location or total for the group.

24,000 Sol's compared to roughly 15,000 Sky's...no wonder I saw so many unsold Sol's on Pontiac lots last summer.

Anyone know when 2007 production actually ended? I've been told June 18, '07 was the beginning of 2008 production.

Thank's in advance...

I bought a very early '08. I believe that the June 18th date is correct for the start of the 2008 model year.

While those numbers were for Calender year 2007, the model year numbers weren't much different.
