R/L smokes when stepping on it while its cold

Is this normal? I notice when I start up and while the engine is still cold, if I step on it, it smokes a bit (more than just a little, but not a whole lot). Local dealer said that was normal since the cat convertor is cold. I just want second (and third and fourth... etc) opinions.

In my experience a dealer will say that pretty much anything short of flames coming out of the car is normal.

Depends on the dealer. There are some very good ones out there. If you're dealing with one that sounds funny, call around. It's all warranty work anyway.

Yeah, I was exaggerating slightly but in the past, I have had dealers tell me that something I knew was a problem was normal.

Are you sure it is smoke and not condensation? All engines when cold will produce condensation until the exhaust system is up to temperature...Skip...

Well I cannot tell for sure. It does not look white, looks darker, so I assumed it was smoke. It only does it if I build up pretty good boost, above 10 psi. Less than that and it is fine, and once it warms up it stops completely.

When cold the rings and piston aren't exactly tight, and that would cause some smoke. It is just like Skip trying to get outa bed in the morning, I am ready but creaking until the old blood starts to flow and I get warmed up. Now that you have that mental image crank up your bad boy tomorrow...Hehehe...Skip...

That's the engine running rich while it is in open loop. Takes about 30 seconds for the HO2S to heat up to put the engine in closed loop. You didn't give many details, so I can only guess.

If it was oil, the smoke would be bluish white.

Our RL does that, but not all the time, it clears right away. Just a little too much fuel at start up and the system is working it out. I consider it normal.

So in conclusion:

white = condensation/water/coolant

bluish tint = oil

black = running rich (could also be excessive carbon build-up being blown out for a moment if you haven't gotten on it recently)
