Need some help.........Replacing rear brakes and rotors.
I cannot get the real caliper piston to depress far enough to get the caliper over new Akebono pads.
I've been turning the piston (clockwise). It keeps turning, but the piston does not seem to be depressing any farther.
I've been turn that thing for 15 minutes.
Any suggestions?
Idea what the problem might be? (perhaps me???)
Thanks for the reply....
I have used the tool and even used needle nose pliers. I am pressing in while turning.
I removed fluid from the brake fluid reservoir before I started. I 'll try it with the cap off.
If you have an AutoZone around...they have a OEM/disk brake caliper tool kit on loaner... Helped me a lot when I changed out my brake pads on new calipers....best part is you get your entire money back when you return the tool....
Thanks, "theracecar".
I'm not having any problem turning the piston. I've used a brake tool and then resorted to needle noose pliers.
Same problem......... piston turns as I am pressing in, but it is not compressing any farther. It does not seem to wat to compress all the way back into the cylinder.
The piston sticks up about 1/8 inch. which is what I need to put the caliper back on........
Frustrating.
I am now going to check the dimensions on the Akebono's and compare that to ACDelco OEM replacement replacement pads.
Shouldn't the piston bottom out? When it does, shouldn't it stop turning? (been my previous experience with rear disk brakes)
To everyone:
Thanks for your input. Problem solved.
My 40-tear old brake caliper tool sheared a pin that I could not see while turning the handle. I took the tool apart, replaced the pin and the tool worked OK. Piston retracted! Brake job completed.
I guess I was crying before I was hurt.
New brake tool is in my future for sure
Thanks.... and for the spell-check by MM.
English is meant for communication, not art If the communication takes place then the spelling was right. The French think their language is art. But I just want to communicate. I am a left brain person and art for the sake of art is wasted engineering.
