Rear diff grinding noise. Is it just noise or is it a major problem?

If the rear diff is making a grinding noise, is this a safety concern which can cause a major problem or is it just an annoyance? Reason I ask is that I've taken mine in twice for this problem. The last time they replaced the diff and now the new one sounds like it's starting to make a noise when in reverse. It's very low and it doesn't bother me but I'm wondering if it does start to get louder if it's something to worry about safety-wise. I'm getting tired of taking it back.

IMO, it is the beginning of it probably will be getting worse. That LSD has been replaced already? I wonder, did they replace it with a NEW one or a "rebuilt" one? I assume when they order one, they'll use whatever is provided from the factory. You gotta beleive with all the failures they have been having, they are recycling previous ones that have failed, rebuilt them, and re-used. Also, did you get the "newer" designed LSD, or is it the old one that did NOT have the torque bar?

iffen you have an older LSD you can not get a torque bar newer one without upgrading the transmission at the same time. The torque bar goes between the transmission and the rear end. Now as to noise in rear end Mr. LC take it to a parking lot and do at very slow speeds some figure eights and listen to the clutch packs loading and unloading. It should be smooth. That is why they put the additive in the rear ends. If you still here crackling and abbynormal noises take it into the dealership....Skip...

they are probably going to do the fluid again and but if that doesn't work i hope they have the clutch packs in stock and they go that route. If that fails to fix the problem you may end up with a new rear end

Back to the original question as far as are binding clutch-packs more than a annoyance. As mine went bad I started dragging a wheel on turns. At some point I'd think that would cause problems driving as wheels hang up a bit. Just my opinion, but I wouldn't let it go as just another noise.
