How difficult is it to replace the instrument cluster? Looking at Marbling's great pdf on removing the dash it appears that I should be able to just snap out the cluster cover and then unscrew the cluster and replace it. Also, does anyone know if the cluster stores the car's mileage, or if this is in the ECU (or whatever)?
Did it myself following the same instructions. You have to remove the entire dash to access the screws that hold in the cluster. I tried to just remove a minimal amount of pieces and get at it but didn't work. It's not a hard job to do just takes time. Follow the instructions and mark with some blue painters tape where the screws came from as you go. I got that advice from MM so I didn't wind up with extra srews like some peopls did. I must have looked over that PDF from Marbling 20 times before I made the change. At that point it was easy.
Good luck.
Thanks for posting. That pretty much scares me off from doing it. The only reason I was looking to change was to swap it for a Canadian cluster (kms over miles instead of miles over Kms), but it doesn't bother me enough to go to that much trouble. I imported my Sky from US.
My Saturn dealer quote was $150 to change the cluster. If you buy a new one from ICS in Kalamazoo for $150, you looking at a little over $300 to change over. Will they let you license your car without changing it to KPH? I own a Canadian spec 1981 Triumph TR8 and I had to change the spedo to get it titled in Michigan.
Yes, I saw the cluster at ICS which is what got me interested. No, in Canada it isn't necessary to change the cluster unless it lacks kms altogether. Having them on the inner ring is acceptable.
Actually you do not need to replace the entire instrument cluster. The face is removable and you can get one that looks exactly like factory but with KMs over miles if you want. Its like $40 for the new face. I bought a cluster from ICS that I am going to modify with brighter LEDs and a custom face for the wife's Green Dragon. Then I am going to take her factory Sky cluster and install custom faces for the Punisher and put it into my Sol. Then I will have a spare. But I suspect that others in our Club will want to use it to build their own instrument cluster.
I am going to have our resident tech do the swap for me. He does house calls.
Earlier this year I refaced and LED-illuminated my original Base Sky's instrument cluster detailed HERE AT REPLY #67 WITH MANY PICTURES TO REVIEW. Then scroll further down to see more comments and pictures.
I got my custom made face from BlackCatCustom.com. I forget the guy's name but he was great to work with. I had him modify an in-stock version so everything cost me $165. You can lower the price by buying what he has in stock. Seemingly, he can custom make gauges any way you like, especially a kilometer version. He might have kilometer versions in stock, ready to ship. He might ship to Canada.
One thing that was exceptional, was his LED kit to replace the incandescent bulbs with LEDs. But BEWARE for after doing so, you might get the fever to replace all your interior illumination. I still have to address the radio, steering wheel controls, and the fog lamp switch,
