Saturn Sky Hood Vents

Anyone know the length and width of the hood vents on our cars? I don't have mine handy to measure...

I don't want to talk about the project right now for 2 reasons...one, I want to make sure what I have in mind is feasible. I don't want to go and get people's hopes up before I have some better answers than just this idea.

The second one is far more selfish...I want to do the modification before anyone else (that I know of) has this done! LOL

So you are going to make them actual vents instead of just bling window dressing?

If that is what you are up to, pay careful attention to where water will go and whether it will cause any problems.

Well yea, that's a no duh. LOL No other reason to ask about hood vent size other than changing them out and for anyone who knows me I don't like doing Faux anything.

Of course, that's already been done many different ways. The way I'm looking to do it is going to be slightly different and not for the feint of heart BUT if it works, I think it's going to be one of the best looking variants short of going with Norm's hoods...

The first phase was to verify dimensions of our existing vents. Having done that, I know what I want to do is at least somewhat feasible. Second will be to see if what I want to do will work with the shape of our hood and what's underneath. IF that all checks out (and I'm lucky to live where I live so that I can verify that before spending a penny) then I will need to look into what lays beneath the vents and what I may do for some water protection. That part I can talk about because the idea I'd have in my head for that is some sort of removable shield that can quickly be attached or removed without tools. Honestly though, what lays below our hood vents on the driver's side is fairly unaffected by water...passenger side though, there could be some issues with the fuse box and battery being so close by.

One thing that would be interesting and quick would be to do a 'tuft test' and stick some wool threads around the vents after you do the cut outs, and take a drive just to check whether flow is out or in.

I know that sounds silly, but people refuse to believe how many vents and scoops that are located far enough back in the high pressure area at the base of the windshield actually result in flow into the engine compartment instead of out.

Pretty sure the Sky vents will flow out as they are fairly far forward, but just takes a minute to find out for sure.....

I was thinking along the lines of LED strips.

Back in high school, one of the 'rich kids' dad bought him a beautiful Pontiac TA (circa 71, my favorite era). The guy added red lights to the fender vents. It looked pretty cool (back then). Meanwhile I am putting around in my folks 73 Hornet (which was actually had pretty nice styling for a 1973 econobox)..

Red LED strip in the Sky fender vents might be kinda cool...
