Sky gas caps

Interesting article in my paper today (Tampa Tribune) concerning more and more reports of gas stealing. (parking lots, driveways at night, etc)

Are there any 3rd party locking gas caps for the Sky?

Have you ever tried siphoning gas from a Sky? I have. It doesn't work.

We have a 2008 GXP. At the local Advance Auto Parts, I got a Stant #11511 locking gas cap for about $20. Been using it six months with no problems. Double check with them when you buy it...they can look up your car so you get the right cap. However, #11511 was listed for a 2007 GXP so yours is probably the same.

I have heard that you can not siphon from newer vehicles as well, so why would anyone need a locking gas cap.

I have also heard of people (gas theives) just punching a hole in the tank and taking the gas anyway!

Newer vehicles have a bladder between the hole you pump gas into, and the tank. This bladder prevents siphoning.

This is generally done on SUV's as it's very easy to just crawl under the vehicle and punch a hole in it. Pretty tough to do to the tiny sky.

Like in the Eighties

In Europe the Opel GT comes with a locking gas cap.

But nobody likes it. You feel like in the Eighties:

1 key for starting, 1 for the gas, 1 (the remote) for the trunk.

In Europe we are used to have 1 key (or 1 remote) for all!

Don't bother, the factory locking gas caps are cheap crap..I have one.

It doesn't matter anyway, if you make it too hard they just put a pan under your car and punch a hole in it! I rather a siphon

After a news report of kids that went along the street, and into restaurant parking lots, and poured sugar or sand into the gas tanks ... I got it when the car was delivered new. I will admit it is rare, but Kappa and other sexy cars get keyed, backed into and targeted from jealous souls.

The use has become routine.

About twenty five years ago I had a locking cap on a cj7. They just twisted it off with a pipe wrench. The only good thing was it was at the dealer for service so they replaced the filler neck.

It is possible to siphon gas from our cars as I have done so when my car was going to the body shop for a couple months. You just need the correct style of siphon hose to go to the gas tank. it takes about 15 minutes to get around 10 gallons of gas out I have yet to find a vehicle that I couldnt get gas out of the tank. I havent tried higher $ cars either since I dont own one.

Saturn dealer told me the tank had an anti-siphon ball valve.

Still doesn't prevent someone from dumping junk in your tank. Wish the door had an inside only release like my Honda.

On the other hand, its a rag top - lots of ways someone can mess with your Sky.

The door is kind of cheese they should have made with a locking door.

I think one can purchase a racing type with a locking door.

Because most cars built in recent years have anti-siphon devices built in.

Mine came with one and I hate it. I'm always fumbling around with the key and the dang thing never feels like it's on tight. I was thinking of getting rid of mine and getting one without a lock!
