SKY Red Line/GXP listed as a "Green Machine" !
That means, our Red Line/GXP are in the top 100 green machines with hybrids! Chicago Tribune article by Jim Mateja, titled "Some unusual 'green machines'" .... Go figure. Environmental Defense, an advocacy group, has teamed with the folks from Yahoo! to offer a Web site listing the top 100 cars based on how "green" they are - and they're not talking exterior color. They are talking less harm to humans and the planet and how easy it is to take a gulp of air that isn't solid. So, the greener the better. Had to visit www.autos.yahoo.com to learn which are clean, green machines. Naturally, tere was gas/electric after gas/electric, with every one sold by Toyota, Honda, Ford and General Motors accounted for. But what catches the eyes is a trio of cars you would expect on an environmental Most Wanted list. They are associated with high mph, not high mpg - and the only function of their batteries is ensuring that the stero works, rather than giving the gas engine a boost. The trio are the $42,990 Lotus Elise convertible sports car, rated at No. 55; the $45,600 Porsche Boxster, No. 76; and the $28,295 Saturn Sky Red Line, No. 97. It should be noted that the Elise was a step ahead of No. 56, the $22,370 Saturn Vue hybrid. John DeCicco, senior fellow for automotive strategies at Environmental Defense, said the fact that those three made the top 100 was neither fluke nor typo. "Almost any segment of the market has some vehicles greener than others, and we wanted to emphasize that in the rating system," he said in a phone interview. "So muchattention has forcused on hybrids and alternate-fuel vehicles that populate the upper region of the Green List. We wanted the ratings to show people that even if they don't shop hybrid, here's a guide to help you get a greener vehicle. And Even in sports cars, some are greener than others. It's not true that if it's not a hybrid, it doesn't contribute to the welfare of the planet." A much more refreshing and realistic approach than you usually get from environmental types that typically insist motorists buy only hybrids and bury everything else deep in the ground. The vehicles were rated based on milage and emissions, since the higher the milage, the lower the emissions. So while the trio are speedsters, it helped that the Elise is rated at 24miles per gallon city/29 mpg highway; Boxster at 23/32; and Red Line at 22/31 - despite its 260- horsepower, turbo-charged engine. And, Rent An Image: Not only is it green, but now you can rent an Elise roadster through Enterprise locations in California, Florida and Nevada. How much? Lotus says that's up to the rental store.
