Speedo Calibration...

I'm in the process of fighting a speeding ticket... several members had mentioned that the speedos may not be properly calibrated. I'm wondering where I would go to see if the calibration is in fact correct?

Thanks...I'm not spending a few thousand to fight a speeding ticket that costs $150 plus traffic school. He claims he got me on his laser gun... he's lying...there's no way I was speeding... He hit someone else and then saw my car and for whatever reason he decided to pull me over... probably because the jackass next to me saw the cop... panicked and slammed his brakes... making it look like I was flying by. I know I've got a slim to none chance of beating this... but I heard that some of the speedos have had calibration issues... if I can use that so be it... whatever it takes to get out of a ticket that I don't deserve... right now all I've got is that the cop was lying... which he definately was.... that jerkoff.

Here's some advice if you're not taking a lawyer. Just tell the truth in a very calm manner. Your honor I truly believe I wasn't speeding and perhaps the officer scoped another car besides mine. In most cases if you respect the court it will respect you. One other thing will come in to play is how long you have been driving and your driving record. If you have a clean record then there should be little or no damage to your pocket book or your insurance rates. Just stay calm, cool and collected.

I agree with Graysky, state the case that there were others around you...use diagrams where possible. As for calibration, find someone with a handheld GPS and do some comparisons at various speeds. If you can show differances between auto speedo and the GPS, it may work. Let us know how it turns out and good luck.

Thanks for the advice Graysky... I agree, cooler heads usually prevail. Sometimes we need to be reminded of that. I'm still trying to figure out where I can go to check the calibration on my speedo(meter). Not a bathing suit

In a situation like this - the state (police in this case) have to produce a preponderance of evidence. Well the lynch-pin is the gun reading. If you calmly and logically cast any doubt on that the judge may just have to toss that evidence.
If you point out the crowded conditions, the traffic conditions around you (Speeding up and slowing down, that could affect the preception of your speed) as well as your sparkling driving record (you do have one - right?), it could be enough...

There are many ways to keep from ever getting the ticket in the first place.... besides driving slower

Most of them are illegal in Kalifornia

Not sure if this works in all states, but here we usually ask the judge to take it "under advisement" and you don't get an actual ticket for it. You may still pay a smaller fine tho. Also, you need to have a good driving record for it to work.

Where I live the x-ways have mile markers. Go a steady speed for one mile (or 2 or 3 etc). Divide 3600 by the time to do that mile... you get speed.

Do some unit cancelation work with paper and pencil if you don't believe me!!!

Cooler heads prevail

The advice fro GraySky about keeping a cool head in court is very appropriate. Upsetting a judge could get you more than just the fine for the ticket. Calling the police officer a jerk off seems to indicate a hot head. Police do not issue ticket just for the fun of it. It may be that he or she was incorrect but it unlikely they were lying. They may have targeted the wrong car, and you should pursue that explanation in court. But they did not issue you a citation just to upset you or for any quota. They honestly believed you were violating the law, it may not be fact, but it is their belief. Stay calm and present a clear and reasonable account of the event. What ever your adjudication, going to court usually reduces the fine if found guilty or no contest. You might consider another nickname for the officer when they are enforcing speed laws on your residential street.
Verifying your speedometer calibration is a good thing. Proving that you were indeed traveling above the posted limit due to an incorrect speedometer is not a defense. Most likely the judge would lower the bail or dismiss the case in the interest of justice, but you would be guilty of speeding as well as an equipment violation.
Thank you for listening.

For what it's worth, the speedo on my Normal SKY pretty consistently reported about 5 MPH under my actual speed with the stock rims and tires. On the Red Line, also with stock rims and tires, the speedo has always been dead-nuts on.

Don't know if that hurts or helps, but there it is.

Is it just me, or does the guy on the left look like he's taking a leak into the pool? And the guy in the middle is watching--

On my last run to Laguna Seca, 3/8 - 10, to watch the Champ Car two day test my GPS showed that my speedo was 100% correct.

That's a very good thing. I think the records are only kept for about 5 years although each state could be different. You may want to check on line at your DMV.
