Exactly... Where I'm from if you are out driving and hit a dog and you do not stop and try to find and notify the owner or the police it's considered hit and run. If you hit a cat you don't have to stop because in the state in which I live they are considered rodents.... I found a cat on my car once after I bought it. I then went out and bought a storm weave car cover from California car covers and have never seen another one on it since.

My 3 cats stay inside....

here they are safe from...
1) cars,
2) coyotes and dogs,
3) neighbors who hate cats

They are worth the trouble of a full litter box to keep them safe from folks like some around here....and they stay off of my car!

On a friend's recommendation I put together a fairly effective way of keeping the neighborhood cat off of my car...

I put a huge number of mouse traps all bunched together at each entrance to my little garage...

And to make it humane and actually a bit more frightening for the cat - I lay a large sheet of aluminum foil over the traps.

When the cat shows up to start sharpening it's claws on my top - it steps on the foil and sets off all the traps at once! In the process, the foil flies up in the air towards the cat and also makes lots of noise!

I hear the cat scream in surprise all the way in my basement!

Looks like it has been doing the trick!

First off, a very sincere thank you to all who aided my dilemma. Both by way of thoughtful suggestions, as well as playful banter to help put my mind at ease. This is the precise reason for forums / communities to exist.
