T Bone @ 60 MPH

Took a licking yesterday.

I had the cruise locked on at 60 on a back road and saw a car stop at a 2-way stop. As I got near the intersection, he jumped out in front of me. When the dust settled, he admitted that he looked into the sun and didn't see me coming.

I was able to cut the wheel and hit his left front tire, instead of the driver's compartment. My Sky took the hit on the front right corner and the secondary impact smashed the passenger's door and rear quarterpanel. We wound up down in a 4' deep gully.

Fortunately, no one was hurt, but the body shop is guessing about $10k in damage to the Sky. I've had it 4 days short of a year and 50 miles short of 34,000 miles of no scratches or mechanical problems.

But I'm amazed. 60-0 in a nanno-second and the car looked remarkably well for the rate of impact. We'll see if there's any frame damage.

WOW!!

Were you contacted by OnStar?
Did your air bags deploy?

Neither of you being injured is nothing short of a God sent miracle. So glad you both came out unscathed. Please keep updating us as to the extent of damage.

I'm glad you are ok. These cars are amazingly safe. Of course we are morbidly curious and want to see pictures.

I forgot all about On-Star. In addition I had two cell phones, but wound up asking a by-stander to call the police. Duh!

No air bag deployment either. I had thrown the car into a skid and just caught the right front corner of the Sky. Since there was no one in the passenger seat, the right bag didn't deploy.

The adjuster told me that the body damage looks like $8,700, but they won't have the final number until they get a look at the suspension and whether or not my trip through the gully added any damage.

But yeah, it could have been worse. If I hadn't gotten the wheel around, I'd have killed the other driver. I was right on top of him. I'm just a little achy, but that's not unusual.

Thanks for the offer. I'm already in withdrawl, driving a Nissan Sentra that's bigger than my Grand Cherokee.

I had 2 cell phones with cameras and forgot to use them. I'll have to see if the adjuster has any.

Fortunately, it didn't damage my Va Tech Alumni license plate frame.

Regards,
