Tonneau cover

About a year ago there was a lot of discussion on the forum about the Saturn Sky Accessory “tonneau cover”. At that time it got a big thumbs down from most members. I am wondering if anything has changed? Are there any positive members out there? Has anyone really got one as I have only seen pictures in the accessories guide and it is the same old picture from day one? Has anyone got some pictures they would like to post? I would like to see how it looks… and the infamous holes…. I enjoy riding with my top down but it sure gets dirty. I had a spitfire back in the day and the tonneau was great! And I know there were holes in the body for the snaps but I didn’t see it destroying the body! Maybe a tonneau is a European thing and the Opal GT has a better design… any buddy care to comment?

Tonneau Cover

Purchased my Sky Red line three months ago and wanted to obtain a tonneau.
Went to a local top shop with a good reputation in this area and they really did not want to fabricate one. Concerns that they had 1) Windshield must be removed to place snaps far enough forward of steering wheel. 2) This appears to be the bigger issue, the dashboard is backed with foam and this may prevent adequate grip for the snaps.

I am going to my local marine canvas guyr this weekend to see if he has any ideas.

I also had a Spitfire with a tonneau and liked it. Now my wife and I have a Solstice (four months old) and bought the tonneau with initial delivery. We haven't actually used it yet but it's fairly bulky and there's no where to store it, especially with the top down. Frankly, it seems easier and more practical to just put the top up when parking and then down again for driving. In my opinion, it would only be practical if you're single.

That said, I still plan to try it out this summer as I would like to relive the old days.

Someone mentioned snaps on the dash. They're not needed with the Solstice accessory design (I assume the Sky version is similar if not identical). There's a plastic clip which snaps in place in the center of the dash right at the bottom of the windshield. A fiberglass bow goes through the front on the tonneau and slides into this clip, holding the front of the tonneau securely in place. The ends of the bow have rubber bumpers on each end and press snugly against the A-pillars. It seems to me that GM did a good job designing the tonneau and it's a quality accessory.

The snaps didn't scare me...it's a car to enjoy! Besides, I understood that there's some provision for preventing corrosion.

Bill K., Mysterious GXP "Thunder"...but my brother has a silver Sky.

Been meaning to sell mine, but never bothered posting it. I've also found it's easier to just put the top up. It's sitting in the garage and I'll never use it. If you read this and want one, I'll throw in shipping. Either that or just let it sit there

[b]Tonneau Cover[/B: so other then 08Sky's local top shop... no one has even tried to have a tonneau cover made?? I have looked at all the past forums about tonneau covers and not once has anyone sent in a real picture of a sky with a tonneau... GM or other.. and I don't mean the sales pictures on the web sites?? If the "holes" are all that bad let's see them and decide for ourselves. Like I said, I have had cars before with the snaps and believe me they weren’t that bad. I won't beat a dead horse any longer but someone out there has a tonneau (custom or stock) and I bet he or she likes it!

I have only seen one forum member post pics of the tonneau, and am pretty certain that it was on the Solstice Forum. A search for tonneau cover should find it.

I wasn't interested in a tonneau, but did make my own cockpit cover (aka: interior cover). A search on this forum should turn up pics of the first generation of that project.

I use the cockpit cover a lot, as it saves wear-and-tear on the top and window mechanisms, and keeps the sun completely off of the interior.

I think the reality it may look good in a picture but it's more work to put the tonneau cover on the just putting the top up. It only takes like 30 seconds to put the top up so what's the point? Not trying to discourage anyone but that's probably what a lot of people think plus the snap thing...

Aside from the reduction in wear on the top, the main value of the tonneau is when driving solo with the top down in very warm or cold weather. The tonneau concentrates the heat or AC on the driver's side.

I had considered buying the tonneau cover but decided against it.
Instead, I went with the Kappabrella.
It takes up almost no room to store in it's little bag.
When I know I will be needing it, I usually have it pre-hooked up in the trunk laying over the top & then when I need it - I just pop the trunk, pull the Kappabrella forward to hook it over the windshield & mirrors, close the trunk, & walk away.
Usually takes me about 15 seconds - that is UNLESS I am having to explain it to other Kappa owners who want to look at it closer, see how it hooks, and then they always want to know where to buy one.
And when I am ready to drive again - it is even less time to lay it back over the top & off I go.
